My Reading Method
Chapter 3
Once you're ready to actually get into the book, you'll need three things:
- The book in your target language (personally, I prefer e-books for language learning purposes)
- A dictionary - I use online dictionaries for convenience. If I can't find the word in a dictionary, I look it up online, in case it is a magical word that's not in Muggle dictionaries.
- Bilingual: Target Language to Native Language. I use this for languages I'm lower intermediate in, or when I don't understand the monolingual dictionary.
- Monolingual: Gives the definitions in your target language. I use this for languages I'm more advanced in.
- A vocabulary review system. I use Anki, a digital flashcard system. Here's where I got my method from.
- Optional: Audiobook version to listen to in your spare time
You'll notice I primarily use digital tools for my language learning, but you can do this in a more analogue fashion, with paper flashcards (look into the Leitner System, if you're interested in doing it like this), a physical book, and a paper dictionary.
Here's what my digital set up looks like:
As you can see, I put the e-book and dictionary on one side of the screen, and make my flashcards on the other. My process is very simple.
- I find a sentence with a word I don't know in it, then copy and paste it into my flashcard. I have an add-on that also lets me add the audio of the sentence into the card.
- I look up the definition of the unknown word, and put that into the flashcard too.
- I repeat the above steps as I read for as long as I want my study session to last, making new flashcards when I don't know a word or phrase. I do steps 1-3 when I run out of new cards, or just when I feel like it.
- Everyday, I learn ten new words, and review all my old ones.
- In my spare time, when I am doing nothing requiring lots of attention, I put on the audiobook and listen to it passively, trying to follow along.
