Organising Your Studies

written by Anthea Hawthorne

Do you find the sheer amount of information Hogwarts has to offer daunting? Do you get overwhelmed at the number of classes, or find it hard to keep track of which lesson you're on at any given point? Do you wonder how on Earth you'll remember everything shown in lessons? This book covers my organisational tips, and how I use technology and planning to make the most of my studies. I use Notion as a planner, and Anki for flashcards, and will detail how to use them. You will also learn my personal tips on how to pass all your classes. This is not a study guide, and cannot replace lessons, but it will help you improve in your studies. This may be updated as I carry on through my studies and explore different ways to study, and see what works best for me.

Planner: Notion

Chapter 2

Some of you may have heard of Notion, and may be familiar with how to use it already. I don't want to go too into depth here, as there are countless tutorials already avaliable. If there's anything you have trouble with, either give it a quick search online, or send me an owl, and I'll try to respond as soon as I can!

This is the program I use as a planner is Notion. I have made an empty template with my set up. In the top right hand corner, there will be a button called "Duplicate". If you press it, and are currently logged into Notion, it will copy the page into your personal workspace, and you can edit it to look however you like. It contains a table for each class you're taking, a lesson tracker, and information for your Anki cards if you want to make them. I will go into more detail about Anki in the next chapter!

Here is what my personal page looks like!

At the top is the lesson label I copy, paste and edit into all my Anki cards. You can see which courses I am currently enrolled on and studying. I have different columns, for the subject, year of the course, how much progress I've made (Not started, In progress, if I'm over half way through the course, and finished), and if it's a core subject, an elective, or an exam (like OWLs and NEWTs). If you click on the name of the subject, it takes you to that course's page, which is where I keep the lesson tracker. Here's an example.

Here I mark if I've made flashcards of that lesson in Anki (if you don't want to make flashcards, you can change this column to "Lesson read" or "Took notes"), and whether I've completed all assignments that I need/want to. In the notes section, I will write where I have left off, whether that be in a section of a lesson, or if I've only done part of a lesson. Sometimes in the space below the table, I draft essays so I don't have to do them all in one go. I also note if I chose not to do an extra-credit assignment.

Play around with the different table filters, and edit to your heart's content! If you want to know more about how to use Notion, click here. You can also try and replicate this system on a different program, or on paper if you so wish. Simply pick and choose which parts of my system you like, and which parts you don't like to create your own personalised planner.
