Lesson Four Study Guide

Chapter 5

The Three Categories are beasts, beings, & spirits. A beast is the exact opposite of a being. Beasts don't have an understanding of magical laws & therefore can't contribute to create laws. Grogan Stump, the Minister of Magic, created the meaning of a beast in 1811.

Beast Classifications

X: Boring

XX: Harmless (We will learn this year)

XXX: Competent wizards should cope (We will learn this year)

XXXX: Dangerous/Specialist training required

XXXXX: Known wizard killer

Imps are XX: Harmless. Imps are pranksters, usually do very little damage to a human, & they have the magical skill to apparate. Casting the Knockback Jinx will stun them, as well as the Verdimillious Charm; the sparks will surprise them. Imps can be pets, but only if you are a trickster such as George Weasley. Bowtruckles are XX: Harmless. They are peaceful creatures & they don't have magical abilities. Bowtruckles love woodlice & fairy eggs, they will live in trees only if the tree can create wand wood, & they are protectors.

The Knockback Jinx

Incantation: Flipendo (fli-PEN-doh)

Wand Movement: A downward diagonal to the right, an upward diagonal to the right, ending with a swish

Concentration/Willpower: Low/Low to moderate

Effect: Emits a blue light to push your rival backwards

Fun Facts

⊱ Merpeople & centaurs are beings, but are deemed beasts by their own preference. Sphinxes & Acromantulas could be beings too, but are deemed vicious & are grouped as beasts instead.

⊱ Some have wanted to group Muggles as beasts, but has never been carried out by the Ministry of Magic.

⊱ Imps frequently resemble pixies, but are less terrifying & don't have wings.

⊱ Bowtruckles have two fingers on each hand.
