Lesson 3) Wand Properties and Movements
Chapter 3
Wand Properties:
-The wand is the main way that people use their magic.
-Some people can do wandless magic, but it is very hard, and Hogwarts does not teach wandless magic until 7th year.
-Wand is as unique as the wizard it chooses
-Ash wand is good for casting defensive charms.
-Phoenix feathers are very versatile and sometimes act on their own accord.
-4 wand descriptions: length, flexibility, wood, and core
-Wands are usually 9 to 14 inches
-If they are shorter, it usually means that the person’s personality is lacking, and if they are longer, it usually goes to a larger person, like a giant or half-giant.
-Flexible wands are usually called pliant, spongy, springy, supple, whippy, willowy or yielding.
-Rigid wands are usually described as firm, inflexible, resistant, stiff, unbending, unpliable, or unyielding.
-Wands only have one wood. (Common misconception)
Mr. Ollivander’s Notes:
-Every single wand is different.
-Trees that provide good wood usually have bowtruckles in them.
Wand Properties (cont’d):
-Mr. Ollivander usually uses three cores: Phoenix feather, unicorn hair, and dragon heartstring.
-Other cores have been used by different wandmakers, like kelpie mane, veela hair, troll whisker, dittany stalk, or kneazle whisker.
-Veela hair wands are usually temperamental. You don’t usually get them at wand shops, although some people may still use them to make wands.
-Veela hair wands are usually inherited by family members.
-There is never more than one core in a wand. Some people have experimented with this, but it usually causes the wand to blow up.
Wand Movements:
-They are essential to cast a successful spell.
-Some common wand movements are flicks, swishes, jabs, and waves.
Magical Limitations:
-You must use the correct incantation, wand movement, and concentration in order to cast a spell correctly.
-Even missing a small detail can bring consequences.
The Mending Charm:
Incantation: Reparo (‘reh-PAH-roh’)
Wand Movement: Inward pointed spiral, continued until the object is fully repaired
Willpower: Minimal
Concentration: High; Visualization of the repaired object should be maintained until the object is repaired.
-Created in 1754 by Orabella Nuttley
-She used it to repair the Colosseum.
The Unlocking Charm:
-Known as the Thief’s Friend
-Eldon Elsrickle was the creator, in Africa
Incantation: Alohomora (‘al-LOH-ha-MOR-ah’)
Wand Movement: Backward S curving up at the end
Willpower: None for simple mechanical locks; minimal to very high for locks ranging from complex mechanical to complex magical.
Concentration: Visualization of yourself unlocking the lock
