Lesson 1) Introduction to Charms

Chapter 1
- You will have to keep a charms journal, where you write 2 to 5 paragraphs about the lesson every week.
- This is to ensure you understand the concepts taught in the class
- NO required textbooks, although there is some interesting books in the library.
- Basics of spellcasting/practicing wand movements/basic charms are the supplementary things covered this year.
- We will also cover why we need a wand to cast spells.
- In Ancient Greece and Egypt, there was a lot of magic involved.
- The Ollivander family has been making wands since 382 BCE.
- Around 1000 CE was when wizards and muggles started to separate.
- In the 1400's, other magical places started to set up governments.
- The International Statue of Secrecy was introduced in 1689.
- The Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery was made in 1875. This is so government officials can tell when you do magic outside of school if you are under the age of 17.
- A wand used to be made of sometimes a hippogriff horn with a feather wrapped around it.
- Now, wands are made from a thin shaft of wood, and a core from a powerful magical creature, such as a phoenix or a unicorn.
- These wands are much more advanced than the older wands.

Spells for today's class:

The Wand-Lighting Charm
Incantation: Lumos (pronounced ‘LOO-mos’)
Wand Movement: Single counter-clockwise loop
Willpower: Low; determines the color of the light
Concentration: Low; lighting up the top of your wand
- Do not put in too much willpower, or your wand will turn red
- If you use to little power, than your wand will be a faint white.

The Wand-Extinguishing Charm
Incantation: Nox (pronounced ‘NOCK-ss’)
Wand Movement: Flick of the wand

- This is a very safe charm, since its effect is immediate and you can't mess it up.
