The Art of Taming

Chapter 4
Any wizard would find the need for a familiar, one way or another. They open much more possibilities and resources for the wizard, from help with daily chores to hunting for secret ingredients for a new potion. Taming such a creature with magical power may be a challenging task, but one worth its trouble.

1. Selecting your familiar
Each and every individual wizard has a familiar that it will connect most deeply and greatly to. Much like a Patronus, the ideal familiar for each wizard can be unique and different. It is said that your Patronus represents the perfect type of animal for you to bond with, but it isn't very easy for one to find and use a stag as a familiar. In that case, you should find a smaller animal that seems similar to the animal - for example, the stag, as a mammal, is closely related to the cat, and a dragon, as a reptile, is closely related to any lizard.

2. Obtaining your familiar
Taming and bonding with your familiar for the first time is the greatest challenge you will probably face at this point. Your focus, again, is vital, but now it also requires charisma so that you can assert your dominance over your familiar, or request a truce or friendship with it. Approach the creature with politeness, then, as if you were asking for a favor, close the distance between you and the creature with your wand pointed away to indicate that you mean no harm. When the creature accepts you and its eyes are locked with yours, gently bring your wand towards the creature, then create a small circular pattern with it while pointed towards the creature. You will be able to get a single message through that the familiar will understand. Depending on which style you wish your relationship to be, your message may differ. If you wish for a peaceful friendship, you may say something like "will you join me as a friend?" For a more strict, tough bonding, you may say that "I am now your master, obey me or die." The latter is not recommended for beginners, as the familiar will often reject you if it feels that you do not actually have the ability to overpower it. If the familiar accepts your message and agrees to join you, the difficult part is done. All that is left is more bonding, which should come naturally as you either treat your familiar as your friend or your servant.
