Riley Carson, a girl in 8th grade, goes to a school in Florida. She has blonde hair and pretty eyes, but she has one problem. Riley was born with no vocal cords, making her unable to speak, making her mute. The only way Riley can talk to people is writing words on a page in her "voice diary", which she writes words in to try to talk to people. Somehow, Riley befriends a girl named Andrea, who was born with selective mutism, which means she is only comfortable talking to certain people. Riley soons does an experiment, and finds out she has selective mutism too when she's able to talk. Maybe Andrea and Riley have more things in common than meets the eye.

Chapter 10
Riley was standing alone, then Andrea walked beside her. "Oh. My. God." Was all that she said. Riley facepalmed. "Why is Alexia doing this!" She yelled. Andrea shook her head. She then walked towards Alexia and pushed her. "What do you think your doing?" Andrea asked Alexia. Alexia scowled. "So your trying to protect Miss Selective Mutism?" She challenged, raising a fist. All Max could do was make a "sorry face" at Riley, who had her arms crossed, raising an eyebrow. Max looked at Alexia and walked towards Riley. "Look, Im sorry about all this happening. But I need you to meet me at the library at 1:00 P.M. Okay?" He said. Riley nodded.

Riley started gathering up her books. It was 1:00 in the afternoon and Max wanted to see her at the library for something. Riley began to pick up her pace as she hurried to see Max. Soon, she got there. Andrea was smiling, and some blood was on her fist. "I gave Alexia a bloody nose." She said. Max gave Andrea the "quiet symbol" because he was trying to tell Riley something important. "Anyways Riley," Max began. "I wanted to tell you something. Summer is coming soon, and things are getting too bad with Alexia. I'm planning on breaking up with her. So, I wanted to ask you this. Will you be my girlfriend?" Riley instantly smiled at the news. She couldn't believe it. Max was actually asking her this. "Yes, a thousand times yes!" Riley replied. Andrea smiled. Today was going to be a good day for her friend, a good day for Max, and an obvious bad day for Alexia, to see her boyfriend becoming her ex-boyfriend and cheating on her to win Riley's heart.
