The name Acromantula has the Greek ακρος (akros), meaning high or "peak," and -mantula, from the English "tarantula." True to their name, acromantulas are massive arachnids who tend to spin their webs high in treetops.

The name Basilisk has the Greek basil(eus) meaning "king", with the suffix -iskos being a diminutive. The whole has the sense of "princeling", purportedly for the crown-like white spot on its head.
