Ultimately, use of Snidgets in Quidditch, and the popularity of the sport of Snidget-hunting, depleted (reduced) the species considerably.
When it became apparent that the Snidget was close to extinction, Elfrida Clagg, Chief of the Wizards' Council, declared it a protected species.
