Chapter 8
History - is basically defined as a representation of what happened in the past. It is presented in an organized manner. Its function is to be analyzed, learned from, and used to identify patterns in an organized fashion.

Memory - is basically a personal collection of events that have happened and affected you in some form or another. It is something that has affected you, that you remember from a personal event. Its function is to be used in a personal manner. It aids in building a personal identity.

As students, we need to learn from history. We need to challenge history. We need to analyze the history. We need to find the truth out for ourselves. We should not accept history on face value.

The History We Remember By Penelope Mornington presents this case very well. She was a known Grindelwald supporter. She believed that Grindelwald was a hero. She taught students to believe whatever Grindelwald did he meant to save the world. Muggles meant to destroy the world. Words can be taken out of context.

Comparing and Contrasting Wizarding War to Muggle World War 2

Global Wizarding War 1938 - 1945
First Wizarding War 1970 - 1981
Second Wizarding War 1995 - 1998

Grindelwald’s War

Prime Minister Chamberlain knew about Grindelwald’s war.

The people fighting in this war were not bashful about exposing the Magical world to the Muggle world.
They did not worry about killing off Muggles during the war.

The Minister of Magic was Spincer - Moon during this war. He gave the prime minister's personal information about this war as it occurred. His desire was to keep the Muggles safe. Chamberlain had to sign a contract to keep the magical world a secret.

Comparing Grindelwald's War to World War 2

Both wars were resolved in 1945.
Grindelwald's war began in 1938 while World War started in 1939.
Global tensions started both wars.

History of Lord Voldemort

He is known as “He who must not be named.”

He committed a multitude of murders between 1940 and 1997.

Harry Potter defeated him.

He was tried to be defeated twice. The first attempt was unsuccessful. The second one was very successful.

History of Adolf Hitler

When he rose to power, he was known as the Chancellor of Germany on January 30th, 1933.

He wanted a pure race called Aryans.

Aryans were mainly blond haired blue eyed individuals.

He brought up a war with people who did not meet this criterion.

He started a mass genocide or killing off people with gas.

He killed people from the Jewish background, different race, different sexual preference,

This period was known as the Holocaust.

His war ended on April 30th, 1945 when the dictator committed suicide by cyanide capsule and a gunshot wound to the head.

Similarities between Grindelwald and Voldemort

Both individuals hated their father. Lord Voldemort’s father was a Muggle. He left him and his mother at birth. Adolf Hitler’s father was very abusive. Both men felt this hatred in their youth.

Both had men had several followers. Hitler gained his acceptance in the military. Voldemort gained his acceptance while at school.

Hitler was also involved in education in the military. He spread his learning to his students. Voldemort spread is learning to his friends at school.

Both men were very well liked. They were great in persuading people to join their cause.

After Hitler became famous, he wanted powerful magical items. He started believing in the occult. Riddle did the same thing. He wanted powerful items to make Horcruxes. He wanted to live forever.

In looking at the way they wanted a pure world, they both achieved it differently. They both wanted a pure race. Hitler wanted an Aryan race. Voldemort wanted pureblood wizards.

Neither one fits their personal new order criteria. Adolf Hitler had dark brown hair and blue eyes and Voldemort had one muggle parent and one Magical parent.

They each had a unique sign. Hitler's sign was a Swastika. It was a bent cross. Voldemort's sign was the Dark Mark. It was a skull with a snake.

Both men killed people without mercy.

Both men had benefactors from their own wealthy families.

Hitler had the Gestapo, which was a secret German police force. They captured people who did not follow Hitler's beliefs. Lord Voldemort had the Death Eaters and Snatchers. They brought in people who were not pure blood. They killed off people that were not pure blood.
