Chapter 4 - Great Wizards and Witches

Hufflepuff has produced just as many brilliant wizards and witches as any other house:

  • Grogan Stump - Minister of Magic (1811-1819). He was one of the most popular Ministers of Magic of all time. He once said: "A being is any creature that has sufficient intelligence to understand the laws of the magical community and to bear part of the responsibility in shaping those laws." This shows he was an advocate for magical creatures rights (such as house elves and centaurs) and believed in equality for all species.
  • Artemisia Lufkin - Minister of Magic (1798-1811). The first female Minister of Magic.
  • Dugald McPhail - Minister of Magic (1855-1865). He came up with the idea of mimicking the muggle bus service, leading to the introduction of the Knight Bus.
  • Newt Scamander - Order of Merlin Second Class, a famed Magizoologist and the author of 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'.
  • Bridget Wenlock - Famous 13th Century Arithmancer, the first to establish the magical properties of the number 7.
  • Hengist of Woodcroft - the founder of Hogsmeade in Scotland, the only all-wizarding villiage in Great Britain
  • Pomona Sprout - Head of Hufflepuff house at Hogwarts. She was in charge of maturing the mandrakes which were used to cure those who had been petrified by the basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets. She took part in the Battle of Hogwarts, dropping dangerous plants on the Death Eaters from the Astronomy tower.
  • Nymphadora Tonks (later Lupin)  A Metamorphmagus, a trained Auror for the Ministry of Magic, and a member of the Order of the Phoenix. Fought bravely at the Battle of Hogwarts and was tragically killed at the hands of Bellatrix Lestrange.
  • Cedric Diggory - Arguably the true Triwizard Hogwarts Champion (since the Goblet was forced to choose Harry as well). Remembered for his kind and sympathetic nature; he wanted to replay a Quidditch match when he learned Harry had fallen off his broom, he asked students not to wear the enchanted badges which insulted Harry, and he helped Harry work out the meaning of the golden egg. Murdered by Peter Pettigrew in the Little Hangleton graveyard.

Hufflepuff has produced many powerful and intelligent wizards and witches, but because as a house we are not boastful, not many people know this. But now you do.

However, one thing about Hufflepuff is true. Hufflepuff has produced fewer Dark wizards than any other house in the school. I think that's something to be proud of, don't you?
