Before wands: Mages and Their Spells

written by Guardian Khadgar

I am the Guardian, Khadgar. I have saved the Earth from its darkest times, when orcs had invaded through a portal and when my fellow protector of the Earth became a demon when he was trying to help save the Earth. In this book, I will tell you about the time when I conjured spells using my hands, not a wand, and when mages were specially trained to defeat dark wizards. Read this if you want to be able to cast spells without your wand.

Magical Defenses

Chapter 5
The magical parry is indeed one of the most basic spells from a mage's arsenal, but it might be the most useful. The incantation for this spell is "Averto." It will redirect anything which has been cast at you. You might see your non-dominant hand glow with green energy when you use this spell. If you wish to control where the spell is redirected (this requires a LOT of energy), you will pretend to grab something in front of you, then throw it in the direction of where you want it deflected. If you do not wish to control it, a ball of white light should appear around you. This might be a good thing to use for a funny YouTube video- people standing in a circle and redirecting spells at each other. The longest streak of spell redirection was 198234 times, before all of the mages were too weak to get a new Margohide potion.

The magical block is similar to that of the parry. The incantation is "praesidium." This will cause a circle of green light, about two feet in radius, to appear in your dominant hand. You will have to physically move the circle to stop the incoming spell, but it requires way less energy than the magical parry. You might get a small pushback, but the spell always redirects itself at a new person if you use magical block.

The hardest defense spell is the vanishing spell. Say, "Peribit!" and you will immediately see a ball of red light appear around you. Whatever touches this ball of light will be vanished, be it spell or object. This requires a lot of energy and practice to be done correctly in battle. Use too much energy, and the ball will make you move uncontrollably, trying to destroy anything. It does not destroy anything you touch, and you can stick out an arm or leg out of the aura. Use too little energy and the ball will just weaken the spell that is being cast at you. Use this in situations when the opponent casts a highly dangerous spell.
