Lesson Seven: The Moon of Mars & Jupiter Study Guide

Chapter 8

Mar’s Moons & Jupiter’s Moons

Mars has two moons; Phobos & Deimos. Phobos translates to fear & Deimos translates to terror in Greek. They are both potato shaped, but Phobos is larger. Both moons face the same way towards Mars as they orbit. Phobos has a greater impact to magic since this moon is the closest to Mars. When Phobos occults Deimos, the magic in the atmosphere decreases because Deimos’s magic gets blocked by Phobos. When they are apart, the magic in the atmosphere also decreases. Jupiter has seventy-nine moons, & of them, four biggest moons. They are called the Galilean moons. They include Ganymede, Io, Callisto, & Europa.

Io & Europa

Io is named after Zeus & orbits around Jupiter in one day & forty-five minutes. It has constant active volcanoes & has magical properties on its own. It increases magical unpredictability & backfires when the A.M.E. is high. Europa orbits around Jupiter in three days & a half & it crumbles mountains & craters. It is covered in water ice & it mirrors less magic due to the liquid water.

Ganymede & Callisto

Ganymede is named after the prince of Troy & is the largest of the big four. It orbits around Jupiter in seven days & six hours & is the largest moon in our solar system. It is covered in water ice & mirrors less magic due to the liquid water. Callisto is smaller than Mercury & is the second largest moon of the big four. It orbits around Jupiter in sixteen days & seventeen hours & it is covered in water ice & rock. It mirrors less magic due to the liquid water & is the farthest away from Jupiter.

Fun Facts
Phobos orbits Mars four times, while Deimos orbits only once in the same time frame.
Europa is named after a Phoenician princess & is the smallest of the big four.
Ganymede has a magnetic field.
The next cluster of Jupiter’s moons consist of Metic, Thebe, Amalthea, & Adrastea.
