Chapter 7

Lexi

Lexi turns back to her friend, trying not to think too much about the three guys at the other end of the table. But the sound of Mattheo's name catches her attention, and she can't help but overhear the conversation that follows.

My heart skips a beat at the mention of Mattheo’s name, and I can’t help but listen in on the conversation from a few tables over. I feel a pang of curiosity, wondering who they could be talking about. I discreetly glance over at the boys, trying to act like I’m not listening in on their conversation.

*Blaise chimes in, his tone teasing. “Say Mattheo, who were you studying with last night?” I hear Mattheo’s reply, his voice taut with irritation. “No one,” he says. “I was studying alone.” I feel a flicker of disappointment at his response. But there’s something about the way Blaise’s smirk grows wider that makes me think there’s more meaning behind the question than they’re letting on.

Blaise leans forward, his voice dropping even lower.

“You know, if you’re looking for someone to study with, there is someone else here who’s been looking for a study partner.”

As the words sink in, my heart rate picks up. Is he talking about me? My eyes narrow, my mind racing. Mattheo’s response is clear and firm, leaving no room for doubt. “I’m fine studying on my own,” he says, his voice crisp. “I don’t need a study partner.”

Lorenzo rolls his eyes, clearly not convinced by Mattheo’s denial.

“Come on, Mattheo, anyone can see that you’ve got it bad for the girl,” he says bluntly. My stomach twists at Lorenzo’s words, my heart racing in my chest. Is it true? Does Mattheo really have ‘it bad for the girl’? And if so, who is he talking about? Me? Wait why do I care. I try to shake off the thoughts, telling myself it doesn’t matter. But I can’t ignore the feeling in my chest. Is it just curiosity, or is it something more? I glance over at the boys again, watching as Blaise says something else to Mattheo, their voices too low for me to hear.

Mattheo responds, his tone sharp, and I can see his shoulders tensing. He looks… frustrated. But why? What could Blaise have said to get him so riled up?

i sigh. You know what it doesn't matter. I stand up and leave the great hall. As I leave the Great Hall, I can’t help but feel a strange mix of emotions swirling through me. Curiosity gnaws at me, making me wonder about the conversation I just overheard. But I push it aside, reminding myself that it doesn’t matter. I’ll just forget about it and move on with my day..... right?
