D-Day

Chapter 16

INTRODUCTION:
Well, today’s topic is sadly more serious than usual. D-Day, or the Normandy Landings took place on June 6th, 1944, and it is the largest seaborne invasion in all of history. Buckle up, kids - you’re about to learn some seriously dark history.

WHAT IT IS:
Like I mentioned before, D-Day, as it is commonly referred to as, is extremely important. It takes place on June 6th every year as a commemoration for the lives lost, around 14,000 casualties from both the German and Allied fronts at least. It was horrible. The Normandy Landings, codenamed Operation: Neptune by its creators, the Allies, in WWII, were done to gain an advantage over the Axis Powers that ultimately led to the fall of WWII and the Liberation of France.

HISTORY:
Eventually, thirty-nine Allied divisions would be committed to the Battle of Normandy: twenty-two American, twelve British, three Canadian, one Polish, and one French, totalling over a million troops. This was the largest ever seaborne invasion ever even  attempted. The Allies misled German forces with the fake Operation: Bodyguard in order for them to be confused about the main date and time of the landings. They also misled the Axis Powers about the place of the landings.

STATS:
The United States included 54,000 infantry troops and had 2,700 casualties. Britain included 54,000 infantry troops and had 1,030 casualties. Canada included 21,400 infantry troops and had 1,200 casualties. Allied Airborne troops, including 4,000 glider troops, totalled 23,400 troops and had 3,999 casualties.

CONCLUSION:
D-Day was a terrible event and I express my solemn condolences for every single life lost. This truly shows us the horrors of war. If you want to read up more about D-Day, there’s loads of material. I personally used Britannica and Wikipedia, but there are a lot more sources. I hope you learned something new today and let us never forget about D-Day.
