Opiconsivia sounds like a superhero from a comic book but it’s actually a Roman festival with a great history. Celebrated on August 25, Opiconsivia honours the goddess Ops who is the goddess of fertility, wealth and agricultural resources.

Her devotees would often touch or lie on the ground as a sign of reverence.

There was also a mirror festival to Opiconsivia in December called Opalia. Opalia was similar to Opiconsivia in many ways but was celebrated at a different point in the crop year.

During the festivals, Ops’ altars were decorated with wine, flowers and bread. The priestesses of Ops wore all white to symbolise purity and oversaw many of the festival events such as chariot races, draft animals and flower crowns. It was a time of fun and festivity for pagan Romans and a welcome break from daily life.
