Magical Moda

Chapter 9

Welcome to Magical Moda. A new addition to the HiH Monthly Magazine, this column specialises in all the hot gossip on the fashion and beauty scene. This column has 4 sections: new makeup launches, trends of the month, season fashion, and finally, the namesake of the article, the magical happenings of the beauty scene!

So sit back and relax, dear Hogwarts students, and let’s dive straight into the tome of trends.

NEW MAKEUP

  1. April 7th: Hourglass: Vanish Airbrush Pressed Powder

Described as “A talc-free, sheer-pressed powder clinically proven to instantly reduce shine for an airbrushed finish that lasts all day. This weightless, shine-controlling powder allows you to set, perfect, and touch up on-the-go.” This pressed translucent powder is rated 4.6 on the Sephora website.

  1. April 5th: - Benefit - The Porefessional Shrink Wrap

With a whopping 4.9-star review on the Benefit Website, the Porefessional Shrink Wrap is described as “an overnight treatment packed with a balanced blend of acids to shrink the look of pores and leave skin looking smooth and plump. The jelly-glaze texture wraps skin like a cozy blanket, sealing in acids and moisture deep while you sleep. Get it on and forget it, then rest easy knowing you'll wake up to skin that looks retexturized, renewed, and brighter overnight and over time.” Worth it? The reviews say so!

  1. April 2nd: r.e.m. Beauty: Essential Drip Glossy Balm

What is apparently Ariana Grande’s holy grail is described as “a nourishing lip treatment that doubles as a high-shine tinted gloss powered by hydrating hyaluronic acid and replenishing super-fruit antioxidants.” It manages a cool 5 on the Ulta Beauty website, and honestly, I can’t lie when I say I’ve been eyeing this gorgeous lip balm!

  1. April 11th, e.l.f., Bronzing Drops

e.l.f. has done it again, ladies and gentlemen. The new bronzing drops are said to be a “nourishing tinted serum for a sun-kissed glow,” coming in 3 shades and rated at 4.4 on the e.l.f. website. I’m eyeing these up and down!

  1. April 1st, e.l.f., Power Grip Dewy Setting Spray

You all know the famous power grip primer. Well, e.l.f. looked at that and said, hmmm…how do we make our customers love us even more? Described as a “Bi-phase dewy makeup setting spray”, it is rated at 4.8 on the official website.

TRENDS OF THE MONTH:

IRIDESCENT SEASHELL NAILS:

Iridescent seashell nails have completely captured the hearts of beauty lovers and A-list celebrities alike. Stars like Kylie Jenner, Megan Fox, and Hailee Steinfeld have been glimpsed rocking the glitter as mermaidcore comes back with a bang to the beauty scene. Seashell nails are, in essence, multi-chrome nails. They shimmer and shine when the light hits them, and no two pairs are alike. Surprisingly, they aren’t that hard to replicate either!

To achieve this stellar manicure, simply follow these steps: Take a pastel-coloured nail polish (make sure it’s matte and opaque) and apply two coats on top of your base coat. All you have to do from there is apply an iridescent top coat and voila-seashell nails.

You can also rest assured that these nails are sure to carry on into the summer as beach season approaches. For now? Flaunt those nails like it’s nobody’s business.

BUTTER BLONDE:

Knock, knock. Who’s there? Oh, it’s just the latest hair colour of the season—Butter Blonde. Spring has arrived, and with it, warm, buttery, yellow tones are dominating the scene. With Max Mara, Givenchy, Lowe, and more brands featuring the colour in their newest collections, it’s a safe bet to say that blonde is back and warmer than ever. Beyonce and Sabrina Carpenter have got the style with their gorgeous hair, and other celebrities are following suit—Zendaya’s dramatic new hair, anyone?

Butter Blonde is characterised by warm yellow tones. The lightness can vary from pale sunny shades to deep honey tones, like the new locks Zendaya is sporting. It’s definitely a good choice for those who have warm or neutral undertones. If you want to follow the trend and go blonde, you have two choices: either a whole all-out blonde to mark the season or lighten certain parts of your hair, like the ends, and add a couple face-framing pieces to mimic Sofia Ritchie Grange.

SEASON FASHION

. As some of you know, April has two seasons, depending on where you are located. If you’re in the northern hemisphere, welcome to spring! If you’re in the south, have fun in the autumn. Obviously, this has a big impact on fashion!

Whether you live in the North or the South, I have just the thing for you. In the spring, we’re still recovering from the winter, but at times the sun takes pity on us. Because you never know what’s coming, you have to get clever. Think of cute layering pieces that will keep you warm on colder days but can also be worn standalone on warmer days, like crop tops and jean jackets. Also, it is definitely a good idea to watch your pants: high rise on the cold and low rise on the warm.

In autumn, it’s actually sort of the same but the opposite. By that, I mean that you’re still recovering from summer, but at times the wind can help. So you still get topsy-turvy sort of days too. In the autumn, I recommend wearing high-rises and saying hello to cute cardigans. Warm enough for a cold day, but able to wear or tie around the waist on a warm day.

No matter which season it is, there is definitely no reason not to look cute!

MAGICAL MODA:

And now what we’ve been waiting for... magical moda! What’s the new “in” robe? Are smoky eyes back in, or is the Gryffindor red lip still hogging the limelight? What’s that new shop for dress robes that’s crowded every day?

Well, dear readers, you’ll soon know. Let’s start with dress robes. Madam Aphrodite’s has just opened off the side of Diagon Alley, and Merlin is packed! With dress robes of every different style, shape, and colour, I think we all see why. Personally, I feel like getting a lovely blue robe from the shop window…Anyhoo, back to the magazine!

It seems the newest trend in magic makeup is the “Felix Felicis” look, or what I like to call the draping-everything-in-sparkles look. Glowy is back and thriving, with a ton of glittery makeup on the market. Even Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes is marketing a love-potion-infused glittery pink gloss. It is the most delectable shade, though.

And finally, I’ll channel Esme Squalor here—Gryffindor Lips are OUT, and indeed, the Hufflepuff’s gold-and-black “Bold Badger” eye look is IN! To recreate this look, dab on some gold eyeshadow and a bold black wing, fading out the gold just a little with some black. Yellow is really having its moment!

Well, that’s all for today, folks. Enjoy!
