Mooncake festival

Chapter 7

Hmm, the mooncake festival. I wonder what that’s about.

Don’t worry; if you read this, you will have more information about this wonderful festival than anyone else. So, what is this festival all about? Let me tell you the story:

In the past, there was a beautiful woman called Chang’e. She had a husband called Hou Yi, and she loved him very much. Hou Yi was a brilliant archer and had many students. One day, ten suns appeared in the sky, and Hou Yi used his bow and arrow to shoot them down. People on earth suffered due to this blistering heat. After he succeeded, people respected him as a national hero. Because of what he did, Hou Yi received an elixir of immortality for saving multiple people from the heat.

Unfortunately, the elixir was only enough for one person; Hou Yi and Chang’e didn’t want to separate. While Hou Yi was away, one of his students entered the house, hoping to steal the elixir of immortality. Luckily, Chang’e was still at home, and to protect the elixir, she only had one choice...

Chang’e drank the elixir of immortality.

Once she did this, she flew up to heaven and became a goddess, leaving her husband behind. An important goddess noticed her, and Chang'e said she wanted to go back. Unfortunately, the godess couldn't do that, so she sent her to the moon to be closer to her husband.

While Hou Yi was alone on earth, he missed her so much that he made an offering to the moon. And he tried to make Chang’e in the shape of the moon.

Now, isn’t that a wonderful and sorrowful story at the same time? How do Chinese people celebrate this?

To remember Chang’e, Chinese people worship the moon by eating fruits. They also celebrate this festival by having large dinners with family and eating various desserts, such as mooncake!
