My Charms Journal (Year One)

written by Emma Nightingale

In our Charms class, everyone is keeping a journal that documents their experience practicing the Charms discussed in class. As I am not too fond of physical notebooks, this book is my version of the assignment in question. The journal will be a rather classical one, with my thoughts and observations included. The contents will be copy-pasted for my assignments, so don't you dare steal them! The Cover is a modified version of Augustus Thomas' "The Witching Hour".

Ode To Sticky Notes - The Sticking Charm

Chapter 17

The charm of the week is the Sticking
Charm. I'm quite happy about this, I don't have any more sticky notes
left and I would love to continue organising my notes. Else, how am I to
ever pass the final exams? It's only a few weeks left, I really should
have started revising ages ago! At least I will now be able to make
those notes all by myself, this should make revising much easier.
Colour-coding rules!

However, the
Sticking Charm does not sound all too nice. Just thinking about what
might happen if it backfired - it wouldn't be too bad if my shoes were
stuck to the floor, or even sticking two objects together that weren't
meant to be charmed. You could reverse that easily. But sticking your
hair together... this kind of reminds me of when I had some chewing gum
in my hair, and I manually had to get it out. I didn't want to cut it, I
like my hair as long as it is! Hopefully, none of these effects will
happen to me, and if they do happen, they will be easily reversable. Or
at least I won't lose my hair!

The charm doesn't sound too hard at the very least.

The Sticking Charm

  • Incantation: Astrictus (‘a-strik-toose’)
  • Wand Movement: The infinity symbol starting and ending in the center, encircling the two objects.
  • Focus: The two parts that should be stuck together.
  • Willpower: High; determines how long the objects will remain stuck and how hard they are to separate.
  • Concentration: None

However,
there is one tiny little problem - there is no guide as to which
syllabe is stressed! And I didn't want to risk and ask the professor in
case that it has just been said and I was distracted by thinking about
chewing gum and my hair. This would be most embarrassing! This is why I
waited for a while, as to observe my classmates and copy their
pronounciation. If they got the charm to work without having major
problems, this should be alright!

At
least the wand movement isn't too complex. Well, actually it isn't easy
to draw an infinity symbol if you don't know it, but this is a classical
exercise when doing rhythmic gymnastics. At least there's one good
thing coming out of years and years of torture! I'm definitely able to
do that movement fluently, without having to concentrate. More brain
power available for keeping the things together!

We're
to practice on different things that are just lying around. My aim is
to make my textbook stick to my lecture notes - before realising that
this might not have been the best of ideas, in case my partner is not
able to counter the spell. But this would firstly mean that I would
manage to make the objects stick to each other. My first attempts just
wouldn't work, but on the ninth try I actually managed to make the
objects stick for a couple of moments. But it's at least a start.

It
actually took my partner and me at least a quarter of an hour to make
the charm work well enough to actually try separating the objects again.
There was just no point in trying to separate them if they fell apart
within seconds. We actually made some kind of game out of this exercise:
We were casting the Sticking Charm at the same time, and then we were
trying to un-stick the other person's objects as quickly as possible.
Whoever managed to finish the unlocking charm first, got a point. It was
neck and neck the whole time. But as the lesson ended, I actually had
managed to win by two points! A chocolate frog for me, yay!

Now it's time to write the sticky notes I'll need for revising.

N.B.: Buy proper sticky notes! They kept falling off after about a week, I can't work like that!
