Tips For The Kitchen

Chapter 31

-Tips for the Kitchen-

Time Management

Many kitchen mishaps can be attributed to poor time management or being distracted.  I've run into this problem a lot with my husband who lets side dishes get cold and doesn't know how to thoroughly multitask.  When cooking, it is best to keep your mind on the task at hand and plan how you cook your meal according to prep time and actual cooking time.

Let's say I have a main dish that takes 30 minutes in the oven, a side dish that takes 10 minutes after the water boils and a vegetable that only takes a few minutes in the microwave.  I will prepare the main dish while the oven preheats.  Once the main dish is in the oven, I can prepare the side dish and wait for the water to boil (Depending on your stove it might take a little less time for water to boil).  Once the side dish is cooking, I can prepare the vegetable and pop it in the microwave.  Again, this is just an example, but if I timed everything out correctly the entire meal would arrive on the table still warm.

This might take a little practice to perfect, but you should try to get everything to finish within minutes of each other. You also want to put your cellphones away while you cook, unless you are strictly using it for an extra timer. Happy cooking!
