Defence Against The Dark Arts 2- Informative Piece Essay

Chapter 1

Review Assignment: Informative Piece (Essay)

Essay Prompt

In no less than 275 words describe to me the two spells learned in class this week. What is a situation in which you would use each of the spells? There will be no penalty for going over the word limit.

If you choose you can write this as a short story. You can also submit a picture or video. If submitting a picture you must include the 250 word description. If you choose to submit a video, it needs to be no less than two and a half minutes and no longer than 5 minutes.

Student Response

The Verdimillious Charm is a defense spell. Its incantation is "Verdimilious", which is pronounced " vur-duh-MILL-ee-us". To cast it, say the incantation while pointing at your target with a slashing movement. Green sparks of energy will explode around the target and surround it, causing your opponent a slight pain.
Since it is not powerful enough to really hurt the target, I would only used this spell as a distraction to gain time to cast another spell, or to escape.

The Verdimillious charm can also be used as a way to light up a room by making a circular motion above your head with your wand. Be careful not to aim at anything else but the air, because the sparks could target it like if you were using it for defense. If cast correctly, a green light will shoot from your wand and explode a few feet away. The explosion will produce a emerald light that will only stay for a short time period. During this time, the light will also reveal any object hidden by dark magic.
I would use the Verdimillious charm as a way to look for traps or hidden door in a room. The Wand-Lightning Charm is more useful to light up a room for a long period of time, but if I just want to illuminate a room for a few seconds, I would use this spell. For example, this could happen if I want to keep my position secret and not reveal it by lighting up my wand for too long.

The other spell we have studied today is the Softening Charm, also called Spongify. To cast it, you must say the incantation (pronounced "SPUN-jee-fye") while doing a "S" motion with your wand. A pink light should go out of your wand and surround your target. It will cause your target to become softer, more rubbery, and slightly lighter. It will only last a minute, but if you charge it, it can last up to one hour. The light will become more purple as you charge it. It works best on small objects, and doesn't work well with metals, stones, living objects, and food. On a person, it will have a light effect on their skin and hair.
I could use this spell if I ever find myself fighting an armed opponent with a club or a stick. I don't think the weapon would be able to hurt me after being softened.
