Chapter 6

The ghost of Abigail Greyson floated in the forest on the grounds of Eaglesclaw. She had felt a strange presence, a disturbance in the delicate magical balances which surrounded the school. As the Ghost Protector, sworn over the many years to defend the castle and its students, it was her duty to check the boundaries and ensure that there were no breaches.

Everything seemed normal, illuminated with her protective silvery glow. There was no sound other than a few leaves rustling. The sky, filled with a million stars all winking and twinkling, was a deep blue, and the treetops seemed to go on forever. A single bird, a night swallow by its sound, made a solemn sound and fluttered to a different branch. The world went still for one unbearable, beautiful moment.

The silence was broken by a single stick cracking under the weight of something heavy. Abigail whirled around in time to see a shadow emerging from the forest. The shadow was tall and bony-looking, with huge antlers. Abigail suppressed a scream as the creature crept towards her. As its shadow overtook her, her mind raced.

It had to be...No, it couldn't be. She had sacrificed herself and allowed it to take her many years ago...it couldn't possibly be returning...but it was.

The Windigo.
