Chapter 8

The next day, Jade was in Potions, adding Lethe River Water to a Forgetfulness Potion. She had discovered a way that she and Alana could share thoughts over a short distance, through reading a book called Practice Scrying: Train Your Mind and Teach Your Senses. She stirred her potion and focused hard on the Charms classroom. An image of Alana appeared on the potion's surface, and Jade stifled a giggle to see her best friend chewing on the top of her quill and staring off into space.

Alana, she thought, laughing softly as Alana jumped, staring at the tiny image of Jade in her glass of water. You can hear me, right?

Yeah.
Jade heard Alana's shocked voice in her head, vibrating through her ears. She had overslept and missed breakfast that morning, and her stomach grumbled. What's the matter?

The headmaster said that he was going to make an announcement at supper tonight. I think it's about the attacks. I'm kind of scared.
Jade stared down at Alana, who was trying to pretend that she wasn't openly scrying in the middle of class.

Yeah, I am too. For the first time, Jade saw a crack in Alana's brave facade. She sounded small, like the eleven year old she really was, as opposed to a bravado-filled girl with the intensity of a lion. Jade had been wondering why fierce Alana had found her way into gentle, down-to-earth Grizzleheart. But seeing her break her shield, even for an instant, let her see the real Alana.

What should we do? communicated Jade, heart pounding.

I don't know. Let's see what the announcement is- Alana was cut short by the Potions teacher snapping, "Miss Pevensie? Are you paying attention?"

Jade quickly stirred the potion, shattering the image and transforming the surface of the potion back to what it should be. Unfortunately, due to her lack of attention, the potion had curdled into lumps at the bottom of the cauldron. Her professor sighed, and Jade began to clean out her cauldron.
