Chapter 7

Inside of the Grizzleheart common room, the very air was charged with nerves and anticipation. Jade sat in one of he coveted armchairs by the fire, and Alana was perched on a side table and chewing on a profiterole she had swiped from the folding tables of food.

"I'm really worried," Jade confessed, staring down at her hands. She had been picking apart a napkin for the past ten minutes, depositing the shreds into her lap.

"Why?" Alana asked, through a mouthful of pastry. "The book said that last time, the intruder failed. So what's to be worried about?"

Jade dropped the napkin pieces. "Well...Professor Clearwater was right about the intruder returning. She said that the intruder, whoever they are, won't fail this time. And what if she's right again? Can you imagine losing a student? What if it was someone we knew?" She buried her face in her hands. She made no sound, but her shoulders shook, so Alana could only assume she was having a silent breakdown.

"Don't cry, Jade," Alana said, patting her limply on the back. "It's going to be okay. Do you think we should tell the headmaster about the prophecy and what we found out?"

"Won't he write it off as us being dramatic and silly?" Jade asked, sitting up and wiping her eyes. "I mean, we are a bunch of nervous teenage students.

"Maybe," Alana conceded, shrugging. "But I bet the teachers can do more with it than we can."

"Well, let's keep it to ourselves for now," Jade said. "If the teachers make an announcement about the second attack, we can tell them what we know. But if they don't, then it's nothing to be concerned about. Let's ride the course and see where it leads us."
