Script - On The Train

Chapter 11

-SCRIPT-

Welcome to the Script of the Hogwarts Magazine, Issue #1. This section features a script from one scene of The Second Generation of Harry Potter for students to act out as they please, whether it’s in real life or as a role-play in the chat.

SCENE 1 – ABOARD THE TRAIN

Characters Involved:

ALBUS POTTER

JAMES POTTER

ROSE WEASLEY

JENNA MCLAGGEN

SCORPIUS MALFOY

LORCAN SCAMANDER

LYSANDER SCAMANDER

The Scene opens as ALBUS flops back down into his seat from the window, where he has been waving. ROSE starts the conversation.

ROSE: Hey Al – wanna see a new spell?

ALBUS grins and JAMES leans forward.

ALBUS: Yeah, go on.

ROSE smiles and holds out her wand

ROSE: (clears throat) Ahem! Folia ae Gadium!

ROSE makes circular motions above her head with a wand then swishes it from side to side. A second later, autumn leaves begin to fall. There is a slight pause as they observe the falling leaves

ALBUS: That is awesome - can you teach me?

ROSE: (nods) It’s very easy. Mum showed my how to do it last week.

JAMES lunges forward to catch a leaf.

JAMES: Your heading for Ravenclaw, coz. (short for cousin)

ROSE: You really think so?

JAMES: (nodding) That or Gryffindoor. For once Albus was right – that was one cool bit of spellwork.

ROSE smiles (recommended modestly, although the actor can choose)

ALBUS: James, what house d’you think I’ll be in?

JAMES laughs

JAMES: Ah, now comes the typical Noob conversation. How should I know, little bro?

ALBUS: Are we Noobs, now? I thought we were ‘ickle firsties’?

JAMES: (announcing and sitting up) Congratulations you have reached a new level! You are now ‘Noobs’!

ROSE and ALBUS laugh.

ROSE: What’s the next level?

JAMES: Lost Longbottom

ALL laugh again but are interrupted b a knocking on the glass door of the compartment.

-ENTER: JENNA MCLAGGEN-

JENNA: Umm, is it all right if I sit here? All the others ones in this carriage are filled with third and fourth years.

ROSE smiles at JENNA.

ROSE: Yeah, sure. Come in.

JENNA smiles back and sits down by a window. ALBUS then speaks.

ALBUS: Hi - I'm Albus. Albus Potter.

JENNA: Pleased to meet you. (smiles slightly)

ALBUS smiles and opens his mouth to speak when JAMES cuts in.

JAMES: Do I know you?

JENNA: I’m Gemma McLaggen.

JAMES: Jack McLaggen’s what…sister?

JENNA nods.

ALBUS: (looks at James) Who’s Jack McLaggen?

JAMES: (snorts) A real pain in the arse.

ROSE: James!

JAMES looks at ROSE, then JENNA.

JAMES: I would apologize, but it’s true.

JENNA: I don’t disagree, but there’s no need to spread it worldwide.

JAMES raises his eyebrows at the girl as ALBUS looks uneasily at him.

JAMES: Well you’re a bit different, aren’t you?

ALBUS: Sorry, but who is Jack McLaggen? Can someone explain?

JENNA: (before JAMES, who opens his mouth) Jack McLaggen is my brother and a fourth-year at Hogwarts

ALBUS: What house?

JENNA looks at JAMES

JENNA: Slytherin.

JAMES: Which is weird, isn’t it, seeing as your Dad was a Griffindoor?

ROSE: And why should that make a difference, James? Slytherins are just as noble as Gryffindoors.

JAMES: Yeah, well…you guys are noobs yet. You won’t be expressing that opinion later.

JENNA: Just who do you think you are?

JAMES: James Potter.

JENNA: And what year are you in?

JAMES: (shrugs) Third.

JENNA: And you think you’re entitled to labeling people as you like and talking about them behind their backs? Really, if you’re a typical Gryffindoor then I’ll willingly opt for Slytherin!

JAMES looks stunned as ROSE and ALBUS hide grins. There is a slight pause, then ROSE speaks.

ROSE: And that was you being bested by a ‘noob’, James. I like your style, Jenna.

JENNA cracks and smile and accepts ROSE’s high-five.

JENNA: Rose Weasley, right?

ROSE: How’d you know?

JENNA: Apparently my Dad was into your Mum at school…awkward.

ROSE: (laughs) Really? She never mentions him.

JENNA: (shrugs) I dunno then. But I basically grew up on your Mum’s books.

ROSE: Yeah – same here – for more obvious reasons. So, what house d’you think you’ll be in?

JENNA: Gryffindoor, maybe. Slytherin’s a possibility. From what I’ve experienced in the past few minutes I’m sort of hoping for the latter.

ROSE: Nah, James isn’t all that bad. Are you, coz? (cousin)

JAMES looks up and rolls his eyes.

JAMES: I’m entitled to my own opinion on Jack McLaggen. Anyway, I’m gonna leave you noobs and find my own compartment. You’re conversation is extremely uninteresting.

JAMES gets up and heads for the compartment door. As he moves out of the door, LYSANDER and LORCAN SCAMANDER approach and they enter the compartment as he leaves.

-ENTER: LORCAN and LYSANDER SCAMANDER-

-EXIT: JAMES POTTER-

LYSANDER: (in an Irish accent) Why hello, Albus, Rose. Fancy reading the quibbler?

LYSANDER tosses the magazine in his hand to Albus and Albus nods his head after catching it.

ALBUS: Hey Ly, hi Lor. You guys wanna sit down?

LORCAN: (in an Irish Accent) Ta Al. (he takes a seat with his twin.)

LORCAN sees JENNA

LORCAN: And who would this be?

LYSANDER: Are you new as well?

LORCAN: (to his twin) Well of course she is, she wouldn’t be here if not.

LYSANDER: It was a rhetorical question.

LORCAN: You ask her, so technically is wasn’t.

LYSANDER: I know what I said-

LORCAN: You can’t get away with saying rhetorical the whole time.

LYSANDER: I didn’t mean it like that, I meant-

LORCAN: Rhetorical means Rhetorical, eejit*, when you say-

ROSE: Guys, guys! This is Jenna McLaggen.

LORCAN and LYSANDER stop and look at the girl.

LORCAN: Ah right. Hallo there Jenna.

LORCAN holds out a hand and JENNA accepts it shyly.

JENNA: Hi – Lor…

LORCAN: Lorcan Scamander. This here’s me right pain in the arse twin Lysander (gestures to Lysander)

JENNA: (to Lysander) Er, Hi.

LYSANDER: Hiya Jenna, best wishes to you - although you may be stabbed in the back by a friend during the course of this year…

JENNA: What?

ROSE: Don’t worry Jen – can I call you Jen?

JENNA: Er –yeah.

ROSE: (smiling) As I was saying, don’t worry Jen. Lysander’s just a little obsessed with Divination, that’s all. Personally I think it’s a rather silly subject, but-

LYSANDER: Hey! It is not silly at all, in fact, it’s

LORCAN: Brother, Divination is the dumbest subject known to wizard kind. Face it.

LYSANDER: And how would you-

ALBUS: (looking up from reading The Quibbler) Er, guys, what’s this article about my little sister?

LORCAN and LYSANDER both look over at ALBUS.

LORCAN: Ah, that’d be the one about her wanting to go to Beaxbatons rather than Hogwarts. Stupid choice if you ask me.

ALBUS: Hey! My sister should be allowed to express her opinions without being featured in a newspaper!

ROSE: Don’t worry, Albus, no one takes the quibbler seriously.

LORCAN looks at ROSE angrily and opens his mouth to speak, but LYSANDER nudges him.

LYSANDER: Yeah, Al, no one cares – I bet hardly any people have read it.

ALBUS: It’s still there! Did anyone allow this? My Dad or Mum?

LORCAN and LYSANDER exchange glances.

LORCAN: Er, yes – actually it was your Dad.

ALBUS: What?!

ROSE: Al let me have a look.

ALBUS looks at ROSE then hands her the magazine. There is a pause as ROSE skim reads it.

ROSE: (shrugs) It’s fine Al, quite honest, actually. What’s the problem?

ALBUS: (still angry) The problem is that-

JENNA: (interrupting ALBUS) Er – guys…

All look at JENNA, who points to the door where SCORIPUS MALFOY stands.

-ENTER: SCORPIUS MALFOY-

SCORPIUS: Can I join you?

LYSANDER, LORCAN, and ALBUS exchange glances, but whilst they do this, JENNA nods in a friendly manner.

JENNA: Of course. Come in.

The OTHER FOUR look at her in a bewildered fashion, JENNA reacting  in the chosen way of the Actress.

SCORPIUS:  (looking at JENNA) I’m Scorpius Malfoy, by the way.

JENNA: (without thinking) Oh, Malfoy. Now I get it.

SCORPIUS looks annoyed.

SCORPIUS: What do you get?

JENNA: (realizing her mistake) Oh –er – nothing. I’m er – Jenna McLaggen.

SCORPIUS: (still uneasy) Pleased to meet you.

JENNA smiles then looks at ROSE for help.

ROSE: You already know who I am, Malfoy.

SCORPIUS: Actually, it’s Scorpius.

ALBUS: It’s gonna be Malfoy.

LYSANDER & LORCAN: (in purposeful unison) I suppose you know who we are?

SCORPIUS: (looks across at them) Ah yes, the Scamander twins.

LORCAN and LYSANDER look at him as if he’s an alien.

JENNA: (after awkward silence) So, er, Scorpius (earns galres from other four) What house d’you expect to be in?

SCORPIUS opens his mouth to answer but ALBUS gets there first.

ALBUS: Slytherin, of course.

SCORPIUS: And what’s wrong with Slytherin?

ROSE: I don’t think anything’s wrong with Slytherin.

SCORPIUS: But you think there’s something wrong with me.

ROSE: No, I-

ALBUS: Yes.

SCORPIUS glares at ALBUS.

SCORPIUS: You know, I though we could be friends, not follow the path of our fathers. But it appears I am wrong.

ALBUS: Yeah, I think you are.

SCORPIUS gives ALBUS a long look then gets up and leaves.

-EXIT: SCORPIUS MALFOY-

ROSE: (after small pause) Albus, that was-

ALBUS: Leave it. (picks up The Quibbler)

There is silence before LYSANDER speaks.

LYSANDER: You were entitled to, buddy.

ROSE: No he-

LORCAN: No one asked you, Rose. My respect, but Albus had his own right.

ROSE frowns, displeased.

ROSE: You are in the wrong, you thre-

JENNA: (standing up suddenly) I’m going to find Scorpius.

The OTHER FOUR look at her, confused and bewildered.

LORCAN: What?

JENNA: You heard me; I’m going to find Scorpius.

ALBUS: (mystified) But – why?

JENNA: Because you guys acted stupidly and he must be feeling pretty unwelcome. We’re all first years and no tension should be created without a reason. If you guys aren’t going to make up with him, fine. But I don’t see anything wrong with him and don’t want to be regarded as an enemy.

Pause.

ROSE: You’re right – I’m coming too, Jen.

ALBUS: Wait, what?

LORCAN: It’s women, mate.

ROSE: Ly, be quiet for you own sake.

LORCAN: What, are you-

ROSE: (holding out her wand) Mimble Wimble!

LORCAN: splutters as Rose smiles

ROSE: Come on Jen, let’s go.

-EXIT: JENNA and ROSE-

LORCAN: (turning to his twin after a pause) Don’t worry, Pal, I have the counter-curse (incants)

LYSNADER splutters and coughs as ALBUS and LORCAN watch him with concern.

ALBUS: You alright?

LYSANDER: (looks up) Women.

END OF SCENE

CHARACTER DISCUSSION:

ALBUS POTTER:

Albus in this first appears to be quite innocent, but when Scorpius shows up he seems to show his bitter and more Slytherin side, and the way that transition is brought across is important. In appearance, green eyes are not necessary, but a boy with dark hair should play this role. Glasses are not necessary but can be added as he may be visionally impaired like Harry. For costumes, simple muggle wear or robes should be sufficient, and of course a wand will be needed.

JAMES POTTER:

James Potter is not necessarily unpleasant, simply confident and prejudiced against Slytherins like most Gryffindoors are. His relationship with Albus is the sort of domineering but caring underneath elder brother. It is important this is maintained. In looks, like Albus, dark hair would be most suitable. For costumes, simple muggle wear or robes should be sufficient, and of course a wand will be needed. He'll be more stylishly dressed than Albus as his character is quite cool and popular, with messed up and gelled hair.

ROSE WEASLEY:

Rose is very like Hermione Granger, her mother was, at that age. She has strong opinions and expresses them fairly as well as considering many options. In appearance it is classical for her to have red hair, but brown and blonde like Hermione would also be suitable. For costumes, simple muggle wear or robes should be sufficient, and of course a wand will be needed. I would suggest smart and neat clothes.

JENNA MCLAGGEN:

As a new character, it's important Jenna is portrayed in the right way. She seems to be quiet at first then sort of unintentionally flares up and shows she's very like Rose, although she shouldn't quite be acted in the same way. She's more Slytherin than Rose and also always says what she thinks. In looks, Jenna can have any variety of features, but is  quite attractive even at eleven. For costumes, simple muggle wear or robes should be sufficient, and of course a wand will be needed.

SCORPIUS MALFOY:

Scorpius, in this scene, plays the good guy, but there is something subtle underneath not yet revealed. He isn't as snide or sneering as his father was, and most definitely not in this scene, but looks like Draco. A guy with fair hair and skin will be needed to play Scorpius, and as for costume, smart black robes or muggle clothes are the sort of thing he would wear.

LORCAN SCAMANDER:

Lorcan Scamander is a very wacky soul, like his mother Luna. He's more confident than his twin and seems to be more talkative as well. Lorcan and Lysander both speak with Irish accents, adding a comic element to the scene. In looks, fair hair is presumed but dark hair is also suitable, as is fair skin presumed. He and his twin dress weirdly, maybe some strange scarf or badges, weirdly coloured clothes or robes, hats. The choices are in huge variety.

LYSANDER SCAMANDER:

Lysander is a little quieter and less confident than his brother, and more dreamy, also being interested in divination as well. He is more like his mother in that department, and often argues with his brother because of his attitude. In looks, fair hair is presumed but dark hair is also suitable, as is fair skin presumed. He and his twin dress weirdly, maybe some strange scarf or badges, weirdly coloured clothes or robes, hats. The choices are in huge variety.

So there you have it, the very first script of the second generation of Harry Potter. Please note that it was written entirely by Lilia Le Fay. Apologies if it is not good quality, it was her first attempt at writing a script. Leave feedback in the form below!
