The object of the equation is to find the value of the Difficulty Index (T), which predicts the success rate of the spell.

 The closer this Index is to zero (neutral) the more advanced the spell, so the higher the Difficulty Index, the easier the spell. The Difficulty Index is directly affected by all the other variables: willpower, wand power, concentration, vitality, mass, and the Similarity Index.
