Chapter 22

Katniss
stumbled suddenly and fell into a small pit, screaming so loudly, the hairs on
the back of my neck rose and I felt goosebumps on my arms and legs.  I thought, "What's wrong with her?"  Then I see the tracker jacker stings.  There's one on her cheek, one on her knee,
and one must be on her neck or she wouldn't be clutching it like she was now.  She curled up into a ball, then blacked out.

I waited and waited until I was sure she'd be out for a while, then I swiftly climbed down the tree.  I paused for a second, deciding, then I ran without looking back.  I wish she could be my ally.  I thought.  No, she'd never want to be my ally.  I remembered and pushed the thought out of my head.  Now I need to relax.  The Careers are out of the Games until they recover from the tracker jacker stings.

I remembered the many times I had gotten stings from tracker jackers.  Most of the time I had gotten those leaves that draw out the poison before I started to hallucinate, but there was one time when a tracker jacker had lazily followed me home from a harvesting day.  It stung me in the elbow, but I had no idea I had been stung.  When I got home, I collapsed on the bed and puked everywhere.

My mother got really worried, but once I stopped, I just sat on a log outside, blocking out the rest of the world while I scratched my face, feeling claws there.  Eventually my mother realized I had been stung, but that wasn't before I started seeing my worst fears coming to life before me.  Everyone rejecting me, my family dying, being in the Hunger Games...

I was in the Hunger Games.  I realized how much my younger siblings must be missing me, how much they're suffering.  Stopping my running, I looked around and realized I was in the area where the nest of tracker jackers were.  That was strangely coincidental.  I remembered hearing the cannons and I wondered who died.  That's when I saw dried blood.  It was everywhere.  I saw it on the leaves, on the trees, on a small pack.  I blinked.  A pack!  I grabbed it, thinking one of the Careers must have dropped it when the nest fell on them.

Then I ran and ran as far as I could away, hoping nobody was following me.  When I finally decided nobody was, I stopped and climbed a tree as high as I could.  Once I was at the top, I opened the pack, my fingers shaking.  Things like this usually didn't happen in the Hunger Games.  This must be a trick.  Was this a trick?  No, I would sense a trick.  I dumped out the contents in my lap and gasped.
