Chapter 16

When I woke up, I was parched.  I looked at my water skin and
thought, please, please, please let there be water in it.  I shook it and
heard a swooshing sound from within.  I quickly unscrewed it and gulped
the water down.  It was warm, but I'm used to warm water.  There
wasn't very much, however, and I knew I had to find a river or stream soon
before I die of thirst.  I remembered what Kirsti said about following
someone to see what their water supply is.

I remembered how close Katniss was to my tree last night and I decided to see if she's still nearby.  I couldn't imagine her dying of thirst.  I climbed down from the tree slowly, then sat on a log behind some bushes that led to a clearing.  I ate a small amount of berries, which helped to quench my thirst, but I knew it wouldn't last long.  I remembered how Katniss scored a ten in her training, and so I knew she was good, which means she can most likely hunt, with a spear or something.

That thought lead to catching food, and that thought lead to cooking it.  I remembered that girl's fire last night, and I assumed the coals must still be hot.  That means Katniss would probably go there first after hunting.  I headed back in the direction of the dying fire, and it only took a minute or two to get there.

When I got there, I looked around for a hiding spot, and I finally decided to hide in some brush and wait.  Soon Katniss burst through the bushes, just as I had predicted, holding a dead rabbit.  I watched as she checked to see if the coals were still hot.  They were, so she settled down by it and got a knife from an orange backpack to skin the rabbit.  She skinned it faster than the butcher in District 11 did, and he was really fast.

Then she made a spit out of branches and she started to cook the rabbit.  I almost ran out there and grabbed the rabbit; the smell was so delicious.  I nibbled on some nuts quietly so I could contain myself until Katniss was done cooking it.  After a little while, she was.  She grounded up some of a charred branch and tried to camouflage her backpack.  It worked pretty well, but I think I could have done better if I had some mud.  That thought only brought me back to my mission: follow Katniss to find water.

She suddenly pulled on her gear, kicked some dirt in the coals, and grabbed her spit.  I silently follow her as she left in the opposite direction of the Careers, pushing away branches in her way and eating a portion of her rabbit.  She seemed to know what she was doing.  She wrapped up the rest of the meat in some plastic she must have gotten at the Cornucopia yesterday.

The sun rose higher in the sky and it got hotter.  Katniss put some rabbit grease on her lips so she wouldn't pant, but I had to just try my best to go unnoticed.  There was one time when I stepped on a branch that I thought I would for sure get caught, but Katniss hardly noticed.  Late that afternoon, Katniss stopped and ran over to some berry bushes.  She picked them off and raised one to her lips.  She paused and studied it as if she didn't know if it was safe or not.  She didn't recognize it, so she moved on sadly.

We were both really dehydrated, but I knew those berries from my district and I picked most of them and sucked their juicy insides contently.  After I finished with the berries and had collected some so I would be less dehydrated, I hurried so I could catch up to her.  She seemed way dehydrated once I finally found her again, and I paused for a moment, unsure.  The berries were only temporary, for I needed water to survive, but Katniss didn't seem to know where she was going, and she seemed less and less healthy.

When she pinched her skin, it stayed up for a couple of seconds, and I knew she was really dehydrated.  I had to make a choice.  Should I follow Katniss who might lead to nothing, or should I try to find a water source myself, which will surely take longer than if I follow Katniss?  I finally decided and turned around, heading in the opposite direction Katniss was going.
