1. His first appearance was handing out chocolates. Everyone has to admit, that IS a pretty good way to become popular and a favorite.
2. Lupin's classes brought out the best in all the students when he taught. If You-Know-Who was a teacher at Hogwarts, he'd be bringing out the worst in people.
3. Lupin helped Harry escape in the Deathly Hallows.
4. Lupin fought the bad guys in the Department of Mysteries.
5. Lupin was one of the first people Harry would go to for advice or help.
