43. Back to the Forest

Chapter 43

James arrived at the Astronomy Tower, where Marigold was staring outside mindlessly.

 “Goldie,”

 Marigold turned around.

“I’ve been looking for you,” he said, coming towards her.

Marigold smiled at him, then turned back to gaze outside. James didn’t say anything; he knew better than to interrupt her daydreams and deep thoughts.

Finally, Marigold turned to face him.

“You know about the Deathly Hallows, don’t you?”

“Of course, every witch and wizard knows the Invisibility Cloak, the Resurrection Stone and the Elder Wand,” James replied. “And I have the Invisibility Cloak.”

“Right,” Marigold said. “And the Resurrection Stone is in the Forbidden Forest. I know because I’ve used it there before.”

James understood what she was trying to say.

“And you want to go there again,”

 Marigold nodded.

“I want to meet my grandparents,” he said. “I see my mum’s parents every holiday, but I’ve never met my dad’s, of course.”

“I want to meet them too, they seem great,” she replied. “And there’s also someone else I want to meet.”

* * *

On their way to the Forbidden Forest, James grabbed Marigold’s hand, which made her blush. James smiled back at her, knowing that he made the right decision. Everything felt right.

Hagrid, with Fang by his side, was watering the pumpkins at the vegetable patch behind his hut, where Witherwings was relaxing.

“Alright there, kids?” he waved at them.

 Fang barked excitedly.

 “Hello, Hagrid!” Marigold called out.

James waved back at Hagrid as he made his way over to them.

Fang wagged his tail. Marigold held her hand out, which he started licking excitedly.

“Are you two…?” Hagrid asked, gesturing at her and James.

Marigold nodded, smiling from ear to ear. James looked down at his shoes, blushing. Hagrid smiled at both of them.

“Hagrid, do you want to come to the Forbidden Forest with us?” Marigold asked.

“Sure, but why are you going there?” Hagrid asked, confused.

Fang cocked his head to the side.

“Because the Resurrection Stone is there, and James and I want to meet some people,”

“Well then, I would love to go with you!”

Marigold, James, Hagrid and Fang headed to the Forbidden Forest. Fang whimpered with fear, and Hagrid scratched his head affectionately.

Marigold glanced around the ground until she spotted the Resurrection Stone; she picked the stone up, pointing it towards the woods.

This time, a translucent figure of a man with curly grey hair and soft brown eyes emerged, followed by two other figures behind him.

 Marigold immediately recognised him.

 “You’re Lorenzo, aren’t you?”

 Lorenzo smiled at her warmly.

“Goldie, he can’t be,” James said. “Lorenzo is only twenty-two, and if he died, Teddy would’ve told us by now.”

“That’s his grandfather,” Marigold replied, before turning to Hagrid. “He was close with my dads when he was alive. He was an incredible man.”

“Well, it’s nice meeting you,” Hagrid said, smiling.

“Nice to meet you too, Hagrid,” Lorenzo replied kindly.

The two figures behind him were more visible now. It was a man and a woman, both of whom looked very young, around the age of twenty.

The man was quite handsome with messy dark hair; he looked a lot like James, except for the fact that he was wearing glasses. The woman next to him was also beautiful, with dark red hair and striking green eyes which looked much like Harry’s.

 Hagrid was visibly stunned.

 “James? Lily?”

“It’s great seeing you again, Hagrid,” the older James said, smiling.

Hagrid started blubbering. Fang looked at his owner, concerned.

“Grandpa!” the younger James exclaimed excitedly. “Grandma!”

“My grandson,” the older James’s delight was also apparent.

Lily smiled, holding her hand out towards her grandson. Meanwhile, Marigold was stunned into silence.

“You,” she opened her mouth at last. “You were my dads’ best friends.”

“Yes, we knew Sirius and Remus,” Lily replied wistfully.

“You remind me of them so much,” James smiled.

His kind smile reminded Marigold of what she heard from Sirius and Remus about their best friend, James, the man who gave them a loving family and showed them never-ending loyalty and support like no one ever.

Marigold felt her heart swell with emotion as her thoughts drifted off to what would’ve been of Sirius and Remus if it weren’t for James; she hated to think that Sirius would’ve been stuck in his abusive home if it weren’t for him.

Marigold then turned to look at Lorenzo; the words that touched her heart when she heard them from Sirius’s memories in the Pensieve came flooding again.

Marigold felt a lump in her throat; before she knew it, tears started falling from her eyes.

“Thank you,” she said between tears. “Thank you for being there for my dads.”

James, Lily and Lorenzo smiled sympathetically.

“Grandma, Grandpa.” the younger James also felt his eyes stinging with tears. “Thank you for saving my dad’s life so that he could save the wizarding world.”

“We’re so proud of him,” Lily said. “And we both love you very much,”

“We’re with you, no matter what,” the older James added.

“We’ll be by your side as you go on in life,” Lorenzo added, emphasising his gaze towards Marigold.
