The Unchosen One - A Harry Potter Story

When Marigold Lupin-Black, the daughter of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, begins attending Hogwarts, she realises that pureblood supremacist ideologies still exist years after Lord Voldemort's defeat. The British wizarding world's fears come true once again when Delphini, the daughter of Lord Voldemort and Bellatrix Lestrange, seizes the position of Minister for Magic to "make the wizarding world great again" by expelling Muggles, Muggle-borns, squibs and werewolves, separating them from witches and wizards. Will Marigold be able to follow in her idol's footsteps, end Delphini's reign of terror and prove herself a true hero?

23. The Gryffindor Team

Chapter 23

On the first day of the new term earlier in the week, when everyone gathered at the Great Hall, Professor McGonagall shared some unexpected news.

“I would like to introduce some new members of the staff,” she announced. “First of all, Professor Sprout retired after the end of the previous term. Professor Longbottom has agreed to take over the post of Herbology professor from now on.”

Professor Longbottom bowed as the rest of Hogwarts gave him a round of applause.

“The new Head of Hufflepuff House will be Professor Avalon Davies, who will also take over Professor Walsh as the new Muggle Studies professor.”

Everyone in the Great Hall applauded in support of Professor Davies. On the other hand, Alyssa Parkinson turned pale at the mention of him. Marigold was relieved since Professor Davies appeared quite young and healthy, unlike Professor Walsh, who was very old and often seemed too tired to teach.

“Last but not least, I would like to welcome Professor Harry Potter as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts professor.” Professor McGonagall declared.

The Great Hall erupted in a loud, enthusiastic round of applause. Marigold couldn’t believe her ears.

“Uncle Harry?” she turned to James and Albus. “You never told me anything! I thought he was still the Head of the Auror Office!”

“My dad told us to keep it a secret,” James replied.

“Welcome to your first Herbology lesson of the term.” Professor Longbottom announced at the beginning of class. “Today’s lesson will be on Mandrakes, which will come up on O.W.L.s. But first, I would like to congratulate Marigold, the new Captain of the Gryffindor Quidditch team.”

The students, both Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs alike, clapped for Marigold, whose jaw dropped with surprise.

“Me?” Marigold asked, surprised at the fact that she was chosen over the older students.

“Prefect and Quidditch captain. You really can do everything.” Andrew said, proud of his best friend.

About a month later, on the day of tryouts for the Gryffindor Quidditch team, Marigold was quite surprised to see that the Quidditch pitch was full of students, including James and Rose, bustling with excitement.

“What positions are you two trying out for?” Marigold asked them.

 “Chaser,” Rose replied.

“Me too,” James added. “You need to put us on the team.”

“I will if you two do well,” Marigold said, then turned to the other students. “Sorry, first-years, but you know the rules. Come again next year. And all Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws, please clear this area. The Gryffindor team allows Gryffindors only.”

The first-years, Hufflepuffs and Ravenclaws all walked away disappointedly.

“Thank you all for coming,” Marigold said. “Would anyone like to go first?”

The students continued to talk amongst themselves.

“Quiet, please!” she said, this time a little louder, but it was no use.

“SHUT IT!” James yelled at them.

The Quidditch pitch immediately fell silent.

“Thank you, James,” Marigold said. “Once again, thank you all for coming. I will put you through a series of drills to measure your skills. And remember, just because you were on the team last year it doesn’t guarantee you’ll have a spot this year. Is that clear?”

 Everyone quietly nodded.

“Alright, would anyone like to go first?”

“Me!” James shot his hand into the air.

“Alright, James, let’s see what you got,” Marigold said as she reached over to unleash the Quaffle.

“And the new Chasers of the Gryffindor team: Georgina Hamilton, James Potter and Rose Granger-Weasley.”

Georgina, James and Rose did a three-way high-five as everyone else applauded them.

“And the new Beaters: Fred Weasley and Hercules Greengrass.”

Fred and Hercules playfully bowed at the others clapped once again.

“And last but not least, the new Keeper: Noel Garfield.”

When the applause died down, Marigold opened her mouth to speak.

“Once again, congratulations to everyone who made the team,” she said. “I will try to schedule a practice session shortly so that we can get enough practice until the first match.”

“My mother was a Chaser during her time at Hogwarts,” James said.

“I know,” Marigold replied. “And she used to be a Chaser for the Holyhead Harpies, wasn’t she?”

“Yep,” he nodded. “And I don’t know if I told you this before, but my grandpa was also a Chaser during his time at Hogwarts.”

“My dads always talk about that.” she chuckled. “From the way they described it, it seems like being friends with your grandpa was a lot of fun.”

“I bet,” James smiled. “And now, we’re here at Hogwarts together, continuing the legacy of the Marauders: Moony, Padfoot and Prongs.”

Marigold smiled back at him, and the two started laughing.
