Marcus took a step closer. Their eyes met. “What're you doing?” Jay whispered softly enough that only the two of them could hear his voice. Marcus shook his head and motioned, “Nothing, I was just thinking.”

Chapter 4

Each day grew colder as another few passed, leaving them in their first freezing rainfall of the season. It was very cold, and the two of them were huddled under the same blanket with flashlights, sitting cross legged on top of their sleeping bags. Marcus was looking through a journal he had stopped writing in ever since his quiet life had begun, just remembering how it felt to be loud and obnoxious, laughing, remembering the best times he had spent with his family members and friends. He had all his friends sign a page in the notebook on his last day of sixth grade. Each of their faces were slipping from his mind. He couldn't quite remember what they looked like. He could remember clearly how each of them acted though. That made him smile. He turned the page and found the following pages to be blank. Nothing necessarily was written there per say, but blank, lined notebook pages described his new way of living perfectly. It was late at night, and neither of them felt like getting any sleep. Jay yawned as he looked through one of Marcus’ many sketchbooks. He observed that mostly animals and landscapes is what he ended up coming up with, and a hint of personality with added color, both using colored pencils and fine art pens. It was amazing what beautiful art he came up with with only a few simple art supplies. But yet again, Jay couldn't deny Marcus as to being a detailed person with wonderful talents. Marcus took in and let out a long breath, lifting his arms up into the air to stretch and squeeze his eyes shut. He closed his notebook. Jay rubbed one of his eyes with his palm and yawned. He was tired. He blinked a few times and pulled the blanket around his body as he slid into his sleeping bag. Jay’s mouth hung open as he closed the sketchbook and set it aside. Unfair was what this was. “There’s only one blanket, and we need to share it.“ he said as he watched Marcus bury himself deeper into the cozy bliss of his blanket. “I don't like that idea.“ Marcus insisted and turned away from where Jay sat, not knowing what to say. “Fine. You have it then.“ Jay shook his head and discreetly smiled to himself. Marcus was sweet, but he could also be ridiculous. Jay settled down in his sleeping bag, letting out a long sigh before he blinked his eyes closed slowly, falling into a deep and dreamless sleep.
