Did You Know?

Chapter 2
Did You Know?
The Harry Potter series has plenty of mysteries and fun little secrets just begging to be discovered. In this article, we will be exploring the world of Harry Potter’s fun facts from Hogwarts to the actors themselves. One tiny secret discovered in the Harry Potter series was that Hogwarts castle is full of secret passages and rooms. Room of Requirements anyone? Almost all of us know that when a headmaster or headmistress dies they usually earn a place on the Hogwarts grounds forever as a portrait, but did you know that all the portraits have their own life story? For example, Dumbledore’s portrait was probably the remarkably well-known story of the wizarding world. Dumbledore came from a troubled family and had made some difficult decisions but in the end, chose light instead of darkness. And another fun fact discovered in the books and movies was that all the portraits can move and visit other portraits. For example, the Fat Lady was able to visit her friend Violet. One of the facts on the list that is told to us at the beginning of the Harry Potter series is that Muggles cannot see Hogwarts. The reason behind this is because the castle is protected by several enchantments which causes the castle to be hidden from the Muggles view. Even Hagrid boosts that Hogwarts is the safest place ever. And if a Muggle were to somehow stumble upon the grounds of Hogwarts, all they will see is a ruin with a sign saying “Keep Out.” Next up on the list is one that might not be as well-known as all the others. Did you know that an enchanted quill and book decide if you can attend Hogwarts? When a person is born, the quill can sense if they have even a bit of magical abilities, but the story goes that both the quill and the book must agree. Evidence for this comes from Neville Longbottom. He was born into a magical family and didn’t show much of any magical ability when he fell out of a window when he was younger by a family member and magically survived, both the quill and the pen agreed and the quill wrote his name down. The book is stored in a small, locked tower at Hogwarts, and has not been held by human hands ever since the castle was built.
