Chapter 1
Of course, anyone and everyone that comes from the United Kingdom knows exactly what I mean when I say the Midlands. For everyone else in the world you are all probably thinking WTF???
In books, posts and pretty much everything else I speak a lot about where I come from where I’ve lived, places I’ve visited but it occurred to me that some people may have absolutely no clue about where it is what it looks like or anything. So, I thought I’d start with the first and quite major place in my life.
This was where I was born and is the location of Cokeworth. It is an area in the central part of England and is the location of major British Cities such as Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Derby and Wolverhampton. It also includes the Peak District which is a wonderful National Park and Area of Natural Beauty.
It is also an area that became famed during the Industrial Revolution for potteries, mills and all sorts of other factory-based work, which is why and how my family came to work in the industry that they did. When I personally think about the Midlands and what it means to me, I remember lots of tall red brick buildings, terraces or detached buildings. I remember the smell of smoke both in the air and that remained on the houses, thick and caked on.
As always, there was happiness that came with any sadness that I felt in this place and one of my happy memories is that feeling of walking in fresh air. A sense of being released from the dungeons or hidden in a house that gave me satisfaction, freedom and a sense of wellbeing.
