Why Couldn't Harry See The Thestrals Until His Fifth Year?
Harry Potter didn't actually witness the death of his parents'. He was there when it happened, and remembers it, but didn't really see it. His father died, but he was in another room. His mother died, but he was in a crib. He only saw green light and heard He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Also, he was less than two years old, and to quote J.K. Rowling, "Harry Potter was unable to see Thestrals for years after his mother was killed in front of him, because he was barely out of babyhood when the murder happened, and he had been unable to comprehend his own loss. ... Other parts of the world have their own equivalent to Thestrals." He saw the death in person of Cedric Diggory at the end of his fourth year, so he couldn't see the Thestrals until his 4th year and he truly witnessed and saw death. The others didn't see Cedric die. Once Harry saw and processed Cedric Diggory's death, he was able to see the Thestrals. The reason for seeing Thestrals, according to J.K. Rowling, "Being able to see Thestrals is a sign that the beholder has witnessed death, and gained an emotional understanding of what death means.". Harry didn't gain an emotional understanding of death until Cedric died. Once he did (summer after fourth year), he could see Thestrals.
