Chapter Five: Ceremony

Chapter 5
Picking up that rock was probably very stupid. But it was so beautiful that I didn’t want to leave here in the dirt. Plus, it was almost winter and if it got covered in snow, I might never see it again! I picked it up, and felt a little tingly. But that was probably just because it was cold. I examined it, wondering what kind of rock, or maybe jewel this could be. Maybe a rare diamond. I heard a crash in the bushes and whirled around, dropping the stone. A doe popped out of the bushed, saw me and dashed away.
“Stupid deer. Scared the heck out of-the stone! Where is it?!” I exclaimed.
I had to be here somewhere. But it wasn’t. The stone was not here. I turned around to pick up the other rock. It wasn’t there either. Then I saw it two feet away. I picked it up. I had to hide it, in case someone else found it and sold it or made it into the most beautiful necklace, and I would be sitting in my room, regretting every moment.
I walked around to find a little, I don’t know, a niche in a rock or something. I heard the ceremony horn. We only blew that when someone announced they were getting married or having a baby. This also meant I had to get back there. I quickly looked around and saw some ivy hanging from a boulder. I slid the purple rock behind the ivy, so it rested against the boulder. The horn blew again.
“I’m coming, I’m coming.” I muttered.
I walked home slowly, thinking about how I lost the big stone, and what I would tell Anne. What could I say, ‘Hey Anne, I found the rock, and another one that was bigger! We could get so many things if we sold it, but I lost it, sorry to get your hopes up.’
I mean come on! Maybe I just wouldn’t tell her. But we were best friends...I figured I should just not tell her yet, then maybe someday when we sold the rock and bought a bunch of jewelry, enough to wear a different necklace or bracelet every day of the year, I would say, ‘Hey, you know we have enough jewelry. Good thing I didn’t sell that other one! What? I didn’t mention it to you? That’s weird I thought I did!’ But it technically was still lying. I’d figure it out later. I couldn’t wait to see what the ceremony was all about.
