Something Much Worse
Chapter 4
"Thank you for defending me, Albus," I said gratefully as I followed Dumbledore down the corridor. "But I still can't believe that Armando would - well, consider throwing me out. Hogwarts is my home. Teaching here has always been my greatest ambition."
"I know, Cecelia," Dumbledore said. "But I am sure Armando will decline Tom the job now that I've spoken to him. He just needed to realise - realise what that man is capable of. What he will do." He paused. "I remember him as a boy when I could scare him by setting his wardrobe on fire." He sighed. "How long ago that seems now. Tom won't be scared by anything anymore. He knows he is a powerful wizard. And I fear - I fear -" he turned to me, a grave expression on his face. The corridor we were in was deserted. The students were all probably still at lunch. "Cecelia, you need to be careful," Dumbledore said seriously. "I cannot be too certain, but I fear that the argument isn't over yet. And I fear that this career argument will turn into something much worse in due time." He bowed his head once before turning and briskly striding off down the corridor.
I stood still, turning Dumbledore's words over in my head. What did Dumbledore mean? What would the career argument turn into? The donging of the school bell sounding three o'clock jerked me out of my thoughts. I would be late for my next class if I didn't hurry. But I still couldn't shake the thought from my head that Riddle would stop at nothing to get my place here at Hogwarts.
