Whispers

Chapter 2
I heard my name being said and took a deep breath before making sure I wasn’t setting myself up to trip over the long velvet dress I wore and pushing the doors to the great hall open. Keeping my eyes on Dumbledore I walked down the middle of the hall, ignoring the whispers that I heard around me.
“Another Malfoy?”
“Oh boy more trouble.”
“She’s kind of hot though.”
I smirked, hearing the last comment before coming to a stop in front of Dumbledore. He placed the sorting hat on top of my head and the room hushed, waiting to see if I would follow my sibling’s footsteps and end up in Slytherin.
“I know just where to put you… But you belong in both the Hufflepuff house and the Slytherin house. None the less you will be a perfect addition to SLYTHERIN!” The hat announced. The whispers started up again as I headed to the table where my brother and sister sat. I took a seat in between Talia and Blasie and, across from Draco.
“Good work,” Draco grinned at me.
“I thought you would be angry in me like Father will be when he hears that I almost ended up in Ravenclaw,” I muttered in response.
“So what? You’re in Slytherin and with us. We won’t tell dad about the Ravenclaw thing and he probably won’t ask,” Talia shrugged.
“Okay. Why are they all whispering though? And why do they have to make such a big deal about a new student?” I asked, glancing around the hall as Dinner began.
Draco glanced sharply around and said, “Just ignore them.”
“It tradition,” Talia told me.
I sighed and began eating my mashed potatoes and roast beef, trying my best to block out the sound of the whispers of which I knew were about me. Around me, Draco, Talia, Pansy, and Blaise chatted about classes, trying to include me in the conversation but like usual I was left out for most of it. I tuned in when they began talking about a class called Defense Against the Dark Arts.
“Gee, they teach us how to defend ourselves against our own Father. That’s a bit much don’t you think?” I rolled my eyes.
Talia laughed, “My thoughts exactly. Even if they try and teach us this, we still don’t stand a chance against Father.”
“Yet he sends me to take care of something he should be able to do himself,” Draco muttered, bitterly.
Talia shot Draco a look and I shut my eyes. He wasn’t supposed to talk about it. Not in front of anyone else.
I changed the subject before Pansy could nose her way into Draco’s business, “What professors should I look out for?”
Almost immediately they started filling me in on the professors that I would have. Giving me tips on how to make it through classes. At one point while they were talking Draco glanced at me and swore under his breath, “Ignore them, Lyra.”
I couldn’t take it anymore and jumped up, “STOP IT! ALL OF YOU JUST SHUT UP! JUST BECAUSE I AM A MALFOY DOESN’T MEAN THAT I AM MY BROTHER, SISTER, FATHER OR MOTHER! YOU DON’T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ME! SO STOP JUDGING ME WITHOUT EVEN KNOWING ME!” At the end of my outburst, I ran out of the stunned, silent room, ignoring Draco and Talia who called after me.
