Chapter 2
"Bye!" I waved to my friends one last time before the red Hogwarts Express rolled away from the station. I was on my way home. My friends rode away from the platform on the train as I turned and began my walk home. Five minutes into the walk, I gave up and just flew the rest of the way because I'm *LAZY* and it is way fast to fly to the ranch than walk the two hours to get there. I landed at the end of the driveway so I wouldn't spook the horses, and began walking up the long dirt driveway.
A black pickup truck came up slowly behind me before passing. I waved to Joe, the stablehand, and his son Austin. Austin goes to Hogwarts with me but headed home yesterday, and I guess caught a ride to the ranch with his dad. Lucky. The passenger window rolled down and Austin's grinning face poked out, "Mabel hop in the back."
I grinned and tossed my suitcase in the bed of the truck before letting the car drive forward and taking a running start at it. I leaped up into the back and landed on my feet. A few seconds later, Joe pressed down on the gas and we were driving down the driveway, not just crawling up it. He pulled to a stop and I grabbed my suitcase, hopping down, off of the truck.
“Good to see you, Mabel,” Joe smiled.
“Always a pleasure Joe. I’ll be out in the stables soon to take Midnight out for a ride after I check on Tyra,” I called over my shoulder bounding up the steps towards the ranch house, where my family lived.
“She’s doing better so she might come out with you,” Joe yelled after me. I grinned, that was the news that would probably make my day. I ran upstairs and dropped my bag off in my room before walking over next door to my sister’s room.
Knocking on the door I called, “Tyra guess who?”
The door flew opened and my little sister came running straight at me, almost knocking me down with a hug. I smiled, Joe had been right. Tyra was looking a lot better than before and I was so grateful for that. She definitely had more energy than she did during march break.
“Feeling up to a ride?” I asked, grinning.
“CAN WE PLEASE?” She exclaimed.
I laughed and tugged gently on her red braids. “Mother and Father have been keeping you in haven’t they?”
“Yep, and it’s been BORINGGGGG,” She groaned.
“Then what are we waiting for? Let’s go!”
Together we bounded down the stairs, outside and towards the stables. Zizou, Tyra’s Lipizzan gelding was being brought inside by Austin. Tyra gratefully took Zizou’s lead rope from him, as I hurried into the stable to grab Midnight’s halter and lead rope. I knew I wouldn’t need to use them to go and get him but I had to follow the ranch rules. All horses out of stalls or paddocks had to be on a lead rope of still have their bridle or halter on.
I headed out to the paddock that Midnight was in and jumped over the fence, walking into the field. I whistled once and three horses came running to me. I smiled and said hello to Midnight, Poet, and Rocky. Poet was a thoroughbred, and Rocky was a Knabstrupper. Poet was Joe’s horse and Rocky had been given to Austin, by my dad, as a birthday gift when he was 10.
I laughed as Midnight headbutted me and slipped on his halter, before leading him towards the gate, where Austin had appeared with a halter of his own. He slipped it onto Rocky and followed me out of the Paddock. We headed to the stables where we groomed, saddled, and bridled our horses before leading them outside. I mounted last after giving Tyra a leg up and making sure Austin didn’t fall as he got on.
We rode off, towards the fields where we always rode. I jumped over fallen trees and Austin made up a jumping course for us to do while we were out in the forest. We raced and laughed until the sun began to set. Tyra was happy and looked healthier than ever ontop of Zizou. We began riding back only to see smoke in the distance. My heart race increased as the three of us urged our horses to go faster.
