“Hello?” Ami called shakily as I glanced around. There was no answer. Books were all over the place, shattered glass lay in pieces on the floor, tables were overturned and the whole place was a mess.
“Where is everyone and what happened here?” I asked.
Ami just shrugged, placing her bag down on the ground. “You start upstairs and look to see if they left a note and if anyone is here. I’ll start in the basement and meet you on the main floor. Holler if you need help or find anything.”
Ami took off for the stairs to the basement. I knew she was on high alert. It wasn’t like our parents to leave a mess behind, let alone not be around when we get home without telling us. I started for the stairs going up to the second floor and looked around our parent’s room first. Nothing. I went through each and every room but there were no clues to anything. I went back downstairs to find my sister looking around the kitchen.
“Find anything?” she asked.
I shook my head, “No.”
She sighed and placed something on the counter. It was our mother’s wedding ring. “This is all I could find.”
“We’ll find them, Ami,” I tried to smile at her.
“I hope so, but I’m worried about them and Ivy. Ivy’s shoes are still home so I don’t think she’s with mom and dad.”
“They are?” My heartbeat sped up. This couldn’t be good.
Ami walked over to the door and picked up Ivy’s favorite high top shoes, showing them to me. I felt the blood rush out of my face. Mom and Dad never would have taken Ivy with them if they were in danger and they would have left her favorite shoes here to let us know that Ivy is still at home.
Suddenly we heard a bang.
“The attic,” Ami said, taking off towards the stairs. “Did you check it?”
“No!” I took off after her.
We bounded up the stairs, then turned and ran up the stairs to the attic. Ami stopped in front of the door and we heard another bang. I saw my sister take out her wand and take a deep breath before reaching a shaky hand towards the doorknob.
