With The Wolves

Chapter 7
I think that I was in a sort of daze as we swept through the forest. I leaned low and clutched the wolf's thick fur, burying my nose in it. I wondered if I was dreaming, and that maybe I was still unconscious on the forest floor. But no, the movement of the wolf under me and the chill of the wind as it blew by was all so real.
We went swiftly deeper and deeper into the forest. Though the trees were close to each other, the wolves avoided them with ease, leaping over logs and roots. Romulus seemed to know his way too - I guessed he had been here before.
Because I was holding onto the wolf's fur, I was able to mind-talk to him. He said that his name was Silvereye, and that we were going to their territory. I tried to ask him why they were taking me along with them, but he didn't answer. I think he understood me, but just wouldn't reply.
Suddenly the trees thinned and then we came into a beautiful clearing. You wouldn't have thought of it as the Forbidden Forest - the sun was shining from above, and the grass was thick and green. The trees that fringed the glade all had hollows in their trunks, and I guessed those were where the pack slept.
I slid off the wolf's back, giving him a pat of thanks. Then the wolf who had led the way - the leader, I figured, seemed to tell all the other wolves what to do. Some spread out to guard the territory, others went to their hollows and lay down, and the rest went a little way away to play or converse. I was amazed at their ability to talk to each other - but, I supposed, these wolves were not normal - they had human level intelligence. I suddenly noticed that the leader wolf was nudging my hand gently. Understanding what I was supposed to do, I placed my hand on his snout. Immediately a low gentle voice was talking to me in my head. I listened while looking into the wolf's deep yellow eyes:

"This is our territory. We thank you for coming."
Slowly, I nodded.
"You have been brought here for two reasons. One, so we can tell you that we want to help you. Your dog has told us what you wish for." The wolf paused. "Or rather, what you wish you could wish on."
I gasped. Then I focused, and replied, "You know about the - the wishing particle?"
"Yes. We know where it is hidden, too."
My heart began to beat very fast. Would these wolves show me where the precious thing lay?
"But we require something of you before we show you." The leader wolf said.
There was a pause. Of course, I had expected this. Why would the wolves give the particle to me without something in return? But I waited for the condition, tense.
The wolf looked at me steadily, and then continued, "There have been wizards in our forest. You humans call what they do 'magi-archaeology', if I recall rightly."
I frowned. "Magi-archaeologists! But they weren't allowed -"
"They come anyway." The wolf answered. "And they do not care about uprooting the life of this forest. They kill us and many other creatures, and they destroy our homes. They do this all in their greed. The people up at Hogwarts have no knowledge of this. You must stop them. In any way you can."
