Career Consideration

Chapter 2
I leaned my forehead onto my hands and sighed. Weariness and frustration seeped throughout my body. I had stayed up till four o'clock last night writing my speech, and now it was all for nothing. I had hardly said any of it at all. And I had failed. This seemed to tug at my conscience, making me feel steadily guiltier, until I rummaged in my bag and snatched out the newspaper that I had kept for reference to distract myself. Unfolding it with pronounced ferocity, I smoothed out the crinkled front page and re-read the article for the umpteenth time.

DANGEROUS, FIERCE THUNDERBIRD ATTACKS MUGGLES PUBLICLY

Just yesterday, the 21st of May, a wild, noticeably aggressive Thunderbird descended onto a London street. It then proceeded to fiercely attack an innocent group of Muggles nearby, injuring them so severely that they had to be taken to St. Mungo's Hospital For Magical Maladies and Injuries immediately. This disturbing scene was witnessed by more than seven other Muggles, who had to be quickly obliviated, yet the harm is done. Undomesticated Thunderbirds cannot be continuing this sort of terrible behaviour, and it appears that the very Thunderbird who caused the harm is sentenced to disposal. I folded the newspaper back up and drummed my fingers on the table impatiently. Lies! I thought angrily. All lies!
I had returned home, finally able to accept that I had been kicked - yes, kicked - out of the Ministry of Magic. Permanently? I thought. Yes, I decided. How would I tell mother and father? Even at my third year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry they had been excited at the prospect of me becoming a Ministry worker, and now that career was gone. Gone, I repeated inwardly to myself. All gone.
I sighed again and pushed back my chair. There was no point just sitting around for the rest of the day. Standing up, I consulted my watch. Quarter to four. Mother would be home soon. I wandered out of the kitchen, through the living room, down the hall and into my bedroom. I slumped down on my bed. You're twenty-one, I thought impatiently. You have better things to do.
Better things to do. My thoughts drifted back to the Thunderbird. It would be killed. Killed. How could the Ministry be so heartless?
Little did I know how much more heartless they would be in future.
