The Eyes Of The Cat

written by Dora Scamander

I'm Amanda Figg - just your average 13 year old girl. Well, aside from some bizzare eye powers, very strange relatives, and cats that understand everything you say - yeah, my life is totally normal.

Doubly Disappointed

Chapter 3

"Do you think I'm crazy?"
Sam's voice replied immediately, "I sure do."
I laughed, but after a moment said more seriously into my cellphone, "But honestly, Sam. It happened again."
There was a long silence. Then Sam said, "I see."
I wanted more. "Sam... what am I supposed to do about it?"
An even longer silence. Then:
"I don't know, Amanda." She paused, and then added, "What moved this time?"
"The remote." I said gloomily. "Came right into my hand."
This silence was the longest yet.
"Sam? Are you there?"
"I'm here, sorry. It's just -" She paused, and then said something that didn't make any sense - "I'm not the one to tell you, Amanda."
And she hung up.
"Hey - hang on, tell me what? Sam!"
I lowered my phone, angry and confused. What did she mean? What did it all mean?
Just then Mum got home.
"Hi darling," She called cheerily from the entrance hall.
"Hi Mum." My voice was glum.
"Bad day at school? Don't worry, a good dinner will cheer you up. I've got your favourite!"
"Mmm."
Mum walked into the kitchen, her arms loaded with groceries. As I helped her put everything away, I could see Mum watching me from the corner of her eye. This was a sure sign that she had something to tell me - something I didn't want to hear.
"Amanda..."
"What?"
"Grandma wants you to stay over at hers for a few nights."
I know this isn't something I should have been annoyed about, but staying at my Grandmother Arabella's wasn't exactly fun. The house smelled of cabbage, cat fur was everywhere and the majority of the time I would have to sit listening to Grandma telling and showing me pictures of every cat she'd ever owned.
"Mu-u-u-m..."
"She's your grandma, Amanda! Besides, you haven't seen her for weeks, and she lives so close!"
"Well, why can't she come over here for once?"
Mum paused. "She's busy, I suppose."
"Busy with what? She's an old lady, mum."
"Amanda, that is no way to speak of your grandma. Now come and peel these potatoes, and no more complaining!"
I set to work, feeling angry, annoyed, disappointed and confused all at the same time.
