Significance of Halloween in Harry’s Life

For Harry, Halloween was more than a night for trick-or-treating. Strange occurrences seemed to follow him around like a shadow on this spooky night. Let’s take a look at a few of these, and you can decide if these were just the result of chance, or if the night was truly cursed for Harry…

Let’s start with the Halloween night of 1981, which changed Harry’s life Never, beginning his strange affinity with this holiday at an early age. This was the very night that Voldemort invaded the Potter’s home, murdered Lily and James, and attempted to kill Harry, too. He survived, but this fateful night changed the course of his life Never.

While Harry’s time at the Dursley’s did not include any weird Halloween events, as soon as he set foot in Hogwarts, the night started to beset him once again. In his first year, during the Halloween feast, Professor Quirrell burst in exclaiming, “Troll! In the dungeons - thought you ought to know,” before fainting. Harry and Ron, realizing that Hermione did not know about the troll, went to find her to warn her. This ultimately led to them fighting the troll, and the Golden Trio was formed that night.

In Harry’s second year, when returning from Nick’s deathday party, Harry, Ron, and Hermione stumbled across Filch’s petrified cat that was hanging beneath the words, “THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS HAS BEEN OPENED. ENEMIES OF THE HEIR, BEWARE.” The Chamber of Secrets was indeed opened on this night.

In his third year at Hogwarts, after enjoying a delicious Halloween feast, the Gryffindors returned to their common room in hopes of settling down in their beds for a comfortable sleep, but it was not to be. For upon approaching the Fat Lady’s portrait, they found long slashes in the canvas, and the Fat Lady was nowhere to be seen.

Peeves helpfully informed Dumbledore and the other teachers that were there, “He got very angry when she wouldn’t let him in, see. Nasty temper he’s got, that Sirius Black.”

Excitement and anticipation was mounting in the days leading up to Oct. 31st when the names of the champions would be drawn from the Goblet of Fire and the Triwizard Tournament would begin. When the last plates of the traditional Halloween feast were cleared, the Goblet of Fire was brought into the Great Hall and the choosing of the champions began. After three were announced (one for each of the magical schools: Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, and Hogwarts), the goblet chose another name, which turned out to be Harry’s own. This event resulted in probably the most stressful and straining school year of Harry’s, which ended in him actually witnessing Voldemort return and narrowly escaping him.

No curious events around Halloween were recorded in the rest of the Harry Potter books (note that they stopped the year Voldemort returned), but the Deathly Hallows that Harry sought after in the seventh book and eventually became the temporary owner to share a part of their name with Halloween.

Coincidence? I think not...
