Bad Brothers

The rest of the events of the evening were as much of the opposite of surprised as Tiberius's lack of surprise had been at his sorting. He had known Hogwarts food magically appeared, and that there was a lot of it, but he had never expected there to be so much as what he saw at the following dinner he had. There was every possible thing anyone could want to eat - every type of vegetable, every type of meat, either roasted, boiled, fried, or baked, every type of savoury pie, every type of sauce, many bowls of salad, and all the other possible meals. Tiberius soon found himself more full than he had ever been before, and when pudding appeared, he could barely fit in one small slice of carrot cake. Then the food vanished, the prefects were commanded to show the first years their dormitories, and he, accompanied by the other Slytherin first years, left the Great Hall.

Maya hurried to catch up with him as they came into the Dungeons. Tiberius felt kind of relieved at her presence, for some reason he could not identify. Either way, she launched into a heavily accented speech about how nice it was that they had been sorted into the same house, and how they could be first years together. He bit his lip at this, but nevertheless gave his consent. Beaming, they followed the prefect, a boy called Jabez Shadon, through the moving wall into the Slytherin Common Room. After showing them where they slept and whatnot, the prefect left them in the Common Room to go up to his dormitory to bed. Tiberius, however, sat down in the window seat by the broad glass window looking into the lake. Watching the giant squid wave its long tentacles at him, Maya plonked down beside him.

"Vou look unvappy," she said. "Vhy?"

Tiberius shrugged. "I'm not unhappy," he said, in what he hoped sounded like a casual voice. "I'm fine." But he felt he was telling a lie for some reason, and swallowed awkwardly.

"Anyvay, I vas granted special permission to play in the Slytherin Quidditch Team," Maya said proudly.

"Really?" Tiberius said, looking up. "Wow."

"Maybe vou could too," Maya said hopefully. "I could say -"

"Wow, that's ambitious, Tiberius on the Slytherin Quidditch Team?" Came a jeering voice from behind them. Tiberius whirled around, and saw Brutus standing there flanked by his usual number of cronies. He looked sneeringly at Maya. "Got yourself a girlfriend, Tiberius?"

Tiberius glared at him. "Get lost," he said angrily.

"The Slytherin Quidditch Team, eh?" Brutus continued sarcastically, as if Tiberius had not said anything. "And ruin the team completely? No way."

His friends sniggered. Tiberius gritted his teeth.

"Go away, Brutus," he said fiercely. "Leave us alone."

"Leave you alone with this stupid foreigner, yeah?" Brutus said, sneering at Maya. "Great friend, I'm sure she is."

Maya's heavily cut facial features contracted into a slightly hesitant yet defensive look. "Vou go avay," she said.

"What was that?" Brutus asked mockingly, cupping a hand to his ear. "Didn't hear above the blabbering."

His friends laughed harder. But Tiberius had had enough. He stood up, pulling out his wand. Brutus smiled meanly.

"I'm so afraid," he said sardonically. "Tiberius is pointing his wand at me - like he knows any magic."

"Leave us alone now!" Tiberius snapped.

"Yeah right, little brother," Brutus said sneeringly.

Maya's expression changed to surprise. She turned to Tiberius. "Brother?" She asked. "He is vour brother?"

Tiberius felt distinctly ashamed. "Um, yeah, but I wish he wasn't."

These words, however, did not reassure Maya enough. With that, she slipped off the window seat, turned on her heel and marched off to the girls' dormitories. Tiberius felt tempted to try and call her back, but, due to Brutus's presence, resisted. He turned sharply to scowl heavily at his older brother.

"Why are you so mean?" He asked angrily. "For goodness's sake, it's my first day here, and you just go and -"

"Scare away your girlfriend? Sorry." Brutus smiled sarcastically, turned, and went over to the opposite side of the common room with his friends. There he started laughing and talking as if nothing had happened.

Tiberius was angered by this. But he tucked his wand back into his pocket. He didn't know any magic, it was true, and besides, why should he care about Maya? But he still felt bad as he trudged up the spiral staircase to the boys dormitories. Why? Why did his brother have to be Brutus Nott?
