Chapter 2

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hogwarts

Around lunchtime, the compartment door opened and the trolley witch looked in. Her friendly old face was weathered with age, and her blue eyes sparkled kindly at them as she gestured at her trolley laden heavily with wizarding treats and lollies, and asked, "Anything from the trolley, dears?"

"Yes please!" Tamsin said, jumping up and rummaging in her pocket. Eventually she pulled out a handful of knuts and sickles, along with several seeds with what looked like green roots poking out of them. "Oh no, my Flutterbloom seeds are already germinating!" She exclaimed. "Ah well, I can plant them at Hogwarts." Then she approached the trolley lady and bought several pumpkin pasties, a box of Drooble's Best Blowing Gum, and a flagon of Pumpkin juice. Then she turned to Tiberius and Maya and asked, "Would you like anything?"

Tiberius shook his head, reluctantly following his father's advice about 'not getting in debt with anybody' while Maya graciously pulled out some of her own money and purchased her own sweets. Maya plonked back down beside him, fed her Golden Snidget a Berty Botts' Every Flavour bean and then offered Tiberius a Chocolate Frog. At first he refused, but eventually he was persuaded, and unwrapped the wizarding treat. Pulling the wrapper off the card, he saw he had received Minerva Mcgonagall. Turning the card over, he read the information on the back.

Minerva Mcgonagall

Minerva Mcgonagall is the current Headmistress of the renowned Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, with an admired reputation of fighting in the Battle of Hogwarts in 1998 and winning the Order of Merlin First Class for her steadfast allegiance in the Order of the Phoenix, a group of wizards and witches led by Albus Dumbledore to fight the Dark Side. She is an expert at Transfiguration, still teaches today, and enjoys gingernut biscuits

Tiberius finished reading and hastily caught the chocolate frog that had hopped out of the wrapper and onto his lap, and of which was trying to get away. Tamsin, who was leaning forward to see who he had got on his card, grinned broadly again and said, "Headmistress Mcgonagall. I can't wait to meet her at Hogwarts!"

Hogwarts, Hogwarts, Hogwarts, is that all they'll talk about? Tiberius thought impatiently.

Afternoon fell into evening, and evening into night. The stars winked and twinkled in the sky, a crescent moon shining steadily overhead in the dark sky, and Tiberius staring out the window, waiting for his first view of Hogwarts. It had been announced that they would arrive at the school soon, and they had been advised to change into their robes and gather their things together. Now, clutching the handle of his trunk and looking out through the glass, Tiberius awaited his first sight of the impressive stone castle.

And then, suddenly, it was there. Windows mere pinpricks of light and the tall silhouette of it rising impressively out behind the glassy lake, Tiberius had his first look of Hogwarts castle. The grounds stretched out around it, and in the distance, there was a dark blur that was the Forbidden Forest.

He stared at it for a minute. And then the buildings of Hogsmeade Station seemed to rise up out of the darkness outside, and the train was coming to a halt. With a lurch, it stopped completely, and Tiberius stood up, along with Maya and Tamsin. Tamsin, flushed with excitement, was first to the compartment door. She was too breathless to speak, only hurrying out into the corridor and leading them off the train. As Tiberius stepped out, the cool night air met his face, refreshing him and feeling pleasantly relieving. A lantern swung over the heads of the many students, and a deep voice rang out, "Firs' years, firs' years, follow me!"

Tiberius stood as high as he could to see who had said the words. He was not surprised to see the large form of the Hogwarts gamekeeper and teacher of Care of Magical Creatures class striding forward, beard bushy as ever and black eyes twinkling under all the hair. A lantern swinging from his hand, he gestured toward the lake, still calling first years forward. Tiberius followed the other first years after Hagrid, who led them over to the lake where there were a cluster of small boats.

"Four to a boat!" Hagrid called, once they were all assembled. "Clim' in, now."

Tiberius clambered into the nearest boat. He was disappointed to find Tamsin and Maya hurrying after him, and also a boy with dark hair and an attentive pair of eyes. He smiled at them, and said, "Excited much?"

"Of course!" Tamsin practically shouted. "Who wouldn't be?"

The boy nodded, but his eyes looked slightly grave. Tamsin hesitated, but before she could say anything more the boat gave a lurch as it set off (magically) with the others and she instead turned to admiring the reflection of the castle on the rippling waters of the lake, and she soon forgot about her conversation with the boy. Tiberius, however, remained curious. He had not missed the grave look in the boy's eyes, and he wanted to know why he had looked like that.

Once across the lake, the boats magically moored themselves at a small dock under the castle where Hagrid helped them all out and then turned to the two large wooden doors before them. This entrance looked large, but Tiberius wondered what the front one would look like. Before he could summon up an estimated image in his mind, though, Hagrid had knocked on the doors and - Tamsin gave a sharp intake of breath - they were opening.
