Chapter 12

Fluxweed

Tiberius followed Maya up the grassy slope, the chill of the night pressing in on him. He didn't know what they were going to do - how were they supposed to find the Potter boy in time? But Maya seemed determined, so he just followed her.

She paused before the wide open front doors. Tiberius held his breath as he heard shouts and screams within. Spells seemed to hiss through the air, and he saw flashes of light on the marble staircase. He clutched his wand tighter.

"Come," he heard Maya whisper. She crept inside. Tiberius felt like his footsteps were echoing on the flagstones of the Entrance Hall as they crossed it, although they barely made a sound. His hand was sweaty on his wand.

Then suddenly a Death Eater came striding down the marble staircase. Tiberius recognised him as Yaxley. He was smiling cruelly and heading toward the dungeons. Maya reacted immediately.

"Petrificus Totalus!" She shouted.

Her curse just missed the Death Eater. He whirled around, his face a mask of rage which quickly settled in to one of scorn. He aimed his wand. "Crucio!" He yelled.

Tiberius lunged forward to push Maya to the ground. The curse flew over them. But he could hear Yaxley's footsteps as the Death Eater approached them - it was now or never. He sat up, aimed his wand, and yelled, "Impedimenta!"

It was a simple freezing charm that he had learned in class, and easy to deflect. Yaxley's smirk was as pronounced as ever as he came closer.

"I don't like to be interrupted," he sneered. "And I won't have a pair of eleven year-olds doing so. Avada Kedavra!"

Maya gasped as the Death Eater shouted the curse, but she did not lose her wits. This time it was she who pushed the other out of the way. The jet of green light hit the wall behind them, and some of the stone crumbled away. Yaxley was getting impatient. "Stupefy!" He snapped. "Crucio!"

The two spells just narrowly missed them again. Tiberius scrambled to his feet and tore across the hall, dragging Maya with him. He heard curses firing after him, but miraculously they all missed, and they were running down a dungeon corridor. It was icy cold here, and his breath showed in a mist before him. Where was the entrance to the common room...?

"There!" Maya panted.

He found the muddy stretch of wall and halted before it. He could hear Yaxley running down the corridor, and the hiss as he aimed curses everywhere. "What's the password?" He asked Maya desperately.

"I can't remember... Gillyweed?" She suggested, her breath coming in sharp gasps.

"No, no..." Tiberius strained his brain. Yaxley was coming closer, and closer, and closer... Then a light seemed to flick on in his brain. "Fluxweed!" He yelled at the wall. It started to open, sliding away to form an entrance. He jumped forward and yanked Maya through, the wall was closing...

There was a bang as Yaxley's curse collided with stone.

And then silence.
