Wizarding Schools - Mahoutokoro
This week we’ll be visiting the island of Minami Iwo Jima, located in the western Pacific Ocean. This volcanic island belongs to the country of Japan, and it is believed to be uninhabited by Muggles. Minami Iwo Jima houses one of the world’s eleven oldest and well-established wizarding schools, Mahoutokoro (pronounced Mah-hoot-o-koh-ro). The school is a very beautiful and exquisite mutton-jade palace housed at the top of the island.
When students arrive at this prestigious school, they are given enchanted pink robes that will grow in size with them. As the knowledge and learning of the pupil increases, the color of the robes will gradually change too, eventually turning gold if the student has achieved the highest level of academic achievement. If they turn white, however, the student has betrayed the Japanese wizard’s code by practicing illegal magic (known as Dark Magic in Europe), or by breaking the International Statute of Secrecy. When someone’s robes turn white, they are immediately expelled from school and put on trial at the Japanese Ministry for Magic. It is an extreme dishonor for this to happen.
Mahoutokoro has the smallest amount of pupils of all eleven wizarding schools. Unlike Hogwarts, Mahoutokoro teaches students from ages 7-18, though pupils only start boarding at the school when they turn eleven. Students who are younger than this are flown every day to the school on the backs of a flock of giant storm petrels.
Mahoutokoro is especially well-known for its academic excellence and Quidditch expertise. The sport was first introduced to Japan by a group of Hogwarts students who were blown off course on their attempt to travel all the way around the world. They had foolishly used inadequate brooms, which led to them having to be rescued by the staff of Mahoutokoro. They stayed there for a few weeks, long enough to teach the students a little bit about Quidditch. Today the winners of the Champion’s League are Japan’s Quidditch team, the Toyashi Tengu. All the members of the team say they got their skill from the intense training they received at Mahoutokoro. I bet those students from Hogwarts wished they hadn’t taught the students of Mahoutokoro about Quidditch!
