Fixing Broken Things

Chapter 1

Thanks for reading this book, just a quick note from the author.

I'm part of a group called It's Getting Hot In Here. In this group, we discuss ways to help save our environment. We also post 1-2 books each week to raise awareness. I don't know how to put how important this is into words.

Take a look at that picture, on the right is a world we could have. A world that we, at It's Getting Hot In Here, are fighting for. On the left, is what the world will be like if we lose this battle. Do any of you want that? And sure, maybe the world won't turn into that until you're long gone. So you might be asking yourself, "Why should I care about what happens after I'm dead?" The answer is: Because this affects you now. Our air is polluted, our water is polluted. You are breathing and drinking garbage. The seas are rising, they could flood whole cities! In National Geographics, I found, "The legend of Atlantis is a story about a moral, spiritual people who lived in a highly advanced, utopian civilization. But they became greedy, petty, and "morally bankrupt," and the gods 'became angry because the people had lost their way and turned to immoral pursuits,' Orser says.

As punishment, he says, the gods sent 'One terrible night of fire and earthquakes" that caused Atlantis to sink into the sea."

I know, we aren't necessarily in the same situation, right? But think about it, people are so caught up in what's going on in their phones, laptops, tablets, and other devices that they hardly have time to say hi to each other let alone notice that they're damaging the world.

Now, imagine you're a polar bear. Tough, strong, brave, and clever. Now, pretend you just had a nice meal. You're belly's full, you're happy and content, you don't think that anything could go wrong in the world. So, you lay down on the ground, you're white coat serving as excellent camouflage. You drift into a peaceful sleep, hoping for a nice meal tomorrow. But when you wake up, you're rocking side to side. You look down, and you're standing on a chunk of ice floating in the middle of the ocean. Panic and confusion take over your mind as you try to understand what's going on and how you got here. That, is really happening. The world is getting a tad too warm and the glaciers are melting releasing more water into the ocean which causes the oceans to rise. One thing leads to another.

This also affects your future. You think that you can go to college, get a good job, maybe settle down with a partner and kids if your world looks like the left half of that picture above? Would you really want to? I am now gonna give the simple truth: We are destroying the world, our home, and guess what: There's no Planet B. Once earth is inhabitable we're done for. We don't have a backup planet to move to in case we mess up this one. So, I'll leave you with some questions: What are you going to do about it? Are you going to give up your future? Or will you join the fight?
