The Letter

Chapter 2
That night Terrence was in the kitchen when everyone was asleep. Matilda must deliver the letter soon, or someone will probably get up to go to the bathroom! Then as if Matilda had heard his thoughts, he heard someone putting something by the front door, then the sound of footsteps going hastily away.
Terrence stood up, then quietly opened the front door. In the darkness, he could see a white parchment glowing in the dark night. He picked it up, shut the door and locked it, then sat back down on the chair. He looked at it excitedly.

Dear Terrence, it said. I know what Sir Theodore is looking for! I sneaked into the castles walls, and into the actual kingdom! Then I listened outside the Kings bedroom, to hear Sir Theodore and his Majesty talking! And you know what they were looking for? A magic.........diamond!! That's what they said! Now meet me in the barn tomorrow!

Love From your best friend, Matilda!

Terrence folded the letter back up, feeling excited. A magic diamond? How cool! He stayed in the kitchen for a few more minutes, thinking about the diamond. Then he decided that he should go back to bed, before anyone came out. So he went back to his room, tingling with excitement.

***

The next day, Terrence got up early. He had his breakfast, and then went out of the house, and started to run towards the barn. No one was in there. Well, Matilda wouldn't have got up that early. So Terrence waited, patting the horses.
One horse he did really like was the white one, Sir Theodore's horse. He let the horse muzzle his hand, then he got some food for the horse.
"Ah, you're up early," said a voice from behind Terrence. He turned around, to see Sir Theodore standing there!
"Sir, I...I just wanted to see your fine horse..." Terrence said.
Sir Theodore did not say anything, but he walked towards his horse.
"Um...are you going anywhere today?" Terrence asked.
Sir Theodore turned around to look at Terrence. "Yes I am, going somewhere. Somewhere very important."
"Oh." Then suddenly there was the sound of running footsteps, and Matilda appeared. "Terrence, you're here already! Well, I suppose you would be excited because...." she stopped abruptly when she saw Sir Theodore. "Uh...because you're having your vigil...today."
"Ah, is that so?" Sir Theodore said. "Yes, how exciting for you, Terrence."
Terrence swallowed nervously. Why did Matilda have to say that? Out of all the other things, why that? He glared at Matilda, who glared back.
"Well, I must be going. I'll leave you so you can talk about... Terrence's vigil," said Sir Theodore, and he walked out of the barn.
"Why on earth did you have to say that?" asked Terrence angrily. "Why, Matilda?"
"That was the first thing that popped into my head. I couldn't just stand there, trying to think! Duh!" Matilda glared at him again.
